  • 120 Towbar recall

Put the Prado in at the local Toyota dealer today for the 130000 service (early 1KD GXL model) and they said there was a recall on the Toyota towbar. Something to do with checking the tension of the bolts. When I picked it up they said it was fine. Anyone know the background to the recall?
    Cheers

I know there was a thread the other day about a towbar that fell off after all the bolts came loose. Wrote of a caravan apparently, might have something to do with it.

    Cheers Andrew

Yes, I saw that. My interpretation was the towbar wasn't a Toyota one but came from another manufacturer. Not sure who made the 'genuine' Toyota ones, though.

I had the 90k service done at Windsor Toyota yesterday and when going through the paperwork with the man behind the counter there was no mention of this. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist though.

The recalls that end up on the government website are safety critical. If it is not there, then there would be some sort of a service bulletin.

Have just checked my Tax Invoice for the service from the local dealer. It says 'Carried out outstanding recall 3606GAI. All ok.' Cheers, Travelman.

Called in to my local Toyota dealer yesterday arvo and inquired about the recall. The service adviser said there was a recall and asked if I used 'weight distribution bars'. I replied no and she said if I had a genuine towbar it was only a quick check, but if it was a non genuine towbar they would replace the towbar?????. I inquired about the WDB's but they were not sure why or if it makes a difference.
Seems strange they would offer to replace non genuine towbars. There was no indicatation of a charge if replaced.

                      yes its true.
had mine in yesterday to fix the radiator issue - see my other thread re this.

they take off the rear bumper and check tension on the bolts - mine needed tensioning.
they also place a new sticker on the towbar to say something about not recommended for using non genuine load levellers - apparently load levellers place too much strain on the assembly and bolts, and can cause failure.

essentially they are saying that if you use non genuine load levellers its at your own risk and they are not liable for any resulting damage.
I would think this would be difficult for them to fight in a court, however I suppose its a push to scare people off using non genuine load levellers.

as I don't have a current use for them, I have no idea how a genuine part differs from say, a hayman reese?
I do have a hayman load leveller at home I was keeping for future use, but now not so sure if I will use it if I need to, or go and get a genuine part.
I guess Toyota have been successful already in making me concerned about using non genuine load levellers!

edit - I didn't pay much attention, but I was sure they said if I was using a non genuine load leveller, they would replace it for a genuine part - not replace a non genuine towbar or towball.

There has been a couple of reports of the HR WDH causing the OE hitch to fail, looks like enough to raise a bulletin for it.

Makes more sense. Didnt even know Toyota made/sold load levelers.

                            Hi there,

To my knowledge, Toyota don't make a Weight Distribution Hitch.

If that's correct, it's a bit difficult to use a "Genuine Toyota Weight Distribution Hitch".
