Educate me here but I was under the impression the serious issue with the Toyota towbar is it is cast and has the potential to snap off. How does new bolts stop that?

I think the problem is the relatively long cantilever overhang of the HR adjustable gooseneck overloading the casting in bending.
IMHO, one of three things will happen:-
1. Bending and distortion and possibly crack initiation in the casting.
2. Movement of the tow bar relative to the attachment bolts and relative to the bolt holes on the chassis.
3. Complete failure where the casting snaps off completely, including the chain attachment holes, chains and trailer/ caravan.
The HR cantilever distance is much greater than the OEM gooseneck. You can't help good equipment.

Latest 2006 Prado Grande Towbar update. There are no Towbars available for 2 months, that makes it August 2014 sometime. Book yours in if it is recalled and be prepared for a long wait.
p.s. A little bird told me the new bars are downrated to 2200kg. Nowhere enough for the beautiful new Custom Billabong Wanderer 19'-0" 'van. Bugger!Last edited by rubbishcop; 18-06-2014, 03:22 PM.You can't help good equipment.

Original tow bar tested O.K. today and was left on the Prado.
The white plastic bumper was removed & replaced to measure the tow bar for distortion.
A new silver/black warning sticker has been applied to the black square casting saying to only use a genuine Toyota load levelling hitch.
I was supplied gratis the chains, shackles, levelling bars, clips, clip lifting handle.
An oversight is that the tow bar tongue was missing from the long cardboard levelling bar & chain delivery box when I got home. Going back tomoz for the tongue.
Not sure yet of load limit yet, let you all know.
My old HR adjustable gooseneck and towball now taken in by Toyota. I have to get a new 2" ball, and all is good again. You can't help good equipment.

My Caravanning Neighbour had his 120 Serviced today and has previously had the Towbar replaced under the recall.
He was told that there are "issues " with his Towbar and have removed it completely from the Prado and have said they will Liase with Toyota and get back to him - considering he is 2000 K's from home with a 6.0M Caravan they better come up with a quick solution.
He was also using the Distribution bars that they also changed over ( and kept his H/R WDT. ) so they can't put blame back on him for the hitch creating problems.
I am now wondering if there are any on going issues with the Towbars and whether to get my change over Bar checked again. I will follow up when Toyota respond to him.

After much consideration and a recommendation from D4D to change the towbar I have done it.... Fitted a new HR bar and thanks to 3810pault and his pics and toyota part numbers have fitted the 150 series cover to hide the original cutout. Happy with the way it looks !
I could not believe the size of the original bar when it was removedDavid (AKA Grumps)
Trying to get away as much as we can with the 2003 GLX 120 Series Prado towing the Jayco Expanda or 5.3 Stacer Seamaster/Merc 90HP.
The Prado build up is in process

Just went through the Government recall site and no mention of a recall on tow bars.
what about the owners that are second or third hand buyers, they can't even check on the recall web site as there is no mention of it there.John
