  • Fuel gauge issues

hi all, i am having issues with the fuel guage , its all over the place at the moment , after putting petrol in it will sometimes show empty and the fuel light comes on, then after a while it will move up to what i assume is the correct level , then drop again then rise again . Has anyone else had this or similar issues ? I would appreciate any help before i go to toyota with the problem , or would i be best to see an auto electrician ? Thanks in advance Andrew .

I have found out that the gauges - usually the tacho but also the fuel gauge - have problems in their servo drive motors in the back of the cluster. I have a very intermittant tacho and have been quoted $300 from 2 different places; 1 in Brisbane and 1 in Sydney. The Brisbane guy let slip that he sends it to Sydney anyway. My fuel gauge has twice in the last 10 months stayed on empty (same position as if the ignition isn't switched on) but the tacho does it once every month or so. Not annoying enough yet to warrant me taking the cluster out and sending it off.
This might not be the answer to your problem but I hope it might help in some way.
    Cheers,
    Justin.

I am having the same issue with my 08 Diesel. The gauge stays on dead empty. It started as an intermittent fault but is now permanent.

Please do let us know if you get it resolved and what and how much is involved.

Justin, Can you share the Sydney contact? Very interested.

        Cheers, Alec

          Hi Alec,
I will have a look around at work for the piece of paper I wrote the Sydney guy's contact details on, hopefully be able to find it sooner rather that later.
The Brisbane guys were SGESCO Max Instruments at Archerfield if that's any help in the mean time.

If you are handy, there are replacement clusters on eBay for ~$100 and up.

Cheers guys, justin, when your gauge stayed at the bottom, did your fuel light also stay on?

No it didn't, and it happened again today - no fuel guage or tacho. I know I had a full tank but needle showed nothing but no fuel light.

Hi Guys, Long time lurker, first time poster.

This may be a silly question, but is the "low fuel light" connected to the gauge / needle, or is there an independent sensor?

Wow, I think I jinxed myself say it didn't happen very often. Twice since the week-end, and today I noticed when I turned the engine off that the tacho stayed at the 1200rpm mark!

                        Hi,

                        Finally found the details for the Sydney guy who fixes the Prado guage problem;

                        Hunter Di Spare Parts Company
                        37 Millett St
                        Hurtsville NSW 2220

I can't vouch for their work so proceed at your own risk!

                        Jus.
