  • Our 150 GXL D4D 6-speed

    Hi all,

I've just posted our old 2006 GX D4D 6-speed in the For Sale section, and here's the first build post for the new addition.

First up I used the great instructions on this site to remove the roof rails and fit Rola 3-bar Heavy Duty Racks (part CGM16-3) that I bought cheap on eBay. Same as we had on the 120, so all the accessories will be carried over. I departed slightly from the install instructions and only used a single height adjuster on the rear-most bar, and none on the other two. The three bars are to all intents level, and I saved a little height overall with a better look IMO.

Also, removed the Grandtreks and put them on the 120, replaced with BFG 265x65x17s. Comparing to the 265x70x17 Cooper ST's that we had on the 120 the first impressions are good. A different tyre for sure, and a bit of a compromise, but I like them.

Next up is a trip to ARB, and a Dig-options unit to install. Again, same as the 120. There is a theme developing......

    Cheers,
    Rob

    Things are coming together nicely...

Fitted ARB winchbar, smittybilt X20 winch with synthetic cable, safari snorkel, Redarc DCDC with Optima Yellow second battery, IPF HID 900's, OME 50mm suspension, a couple of 12v sockets in the boot to run the fridge and some 12mm recovery points up front.

Waiting for a free weekend to fit the new Dig-Options head unit.

Managed a shakedown run to the Murray Mouth on the weekend. Heaps of traffic so the beach was pretty soft for the last 2kms, hence a good test. Performed well compared to the 120 series on a run that I know very well.

Thanks mate, but the budget wouldn't extend to a new one plus all the goodies I wanted. It's actually a late 2010 ex-NT Department of Education bus, bought at the Pickles Darwin auction. A quick flight up there confirmed it was in good nick, didn't smell too bad and had seen plenty of red dust but not too much moisture and serious offroading. An email to Toyota confirmed the warranty was still valid and I could extend it for another 3 years. Later that day I owned it with nearly $30k saved on the new car price for all this added stuff.

Did the same thing with the previous 120 series. That was ex-VIC Department of Sustainability & Environment.

I just saw the cornes Toyota number plate surround, so made the assumption you got it from there.

Good saving, unfortunately the misses wanted an Altitude, so had to go new, and sell the 120 privately

Yep, I guessed that the plate surround gave you that idea. I really liked the Altitude also but just couldn't get the sums to work. Had to sell the 120 series privately too (refer separate thread) to bring it all together!

Altitude is a great car, and has some excellent extras, worked a good deal with boys at cornes, plus notated lease through work, and good pricing through arb. Just need more time to get out and use it now

It's been a while but I finally got around to installing the DigOptions Premium Navigation/Multimedia System (AVN-PP04) using the great tips on this site.

Have to say I'm very happy with the unit and it's a considerable improvement on the old version I installed in the 120 series. Install was pretty easy and all fits neatly. The GPS antenna goes well under the fake centre speaker above the upper screen.

                  The photo's below show:
                  - Factory reversing camera hooked up to the new upper screen
                  - IGO8 satnav with road banners changed from bubble to labels
                  - Radio interface which is a good improvement on the last version in our 120 series
                  - New lower unit with controls

Yep. I removed the mic from the foam cover and clip, and stuck it inside the facia above the hazard switch with double-sided tape. On mine theres a little hole there. See below.

did you have much trouble hooking up the reversing camera to the dig options unit?

It required making an RCA plug and then cutting into the factory loom and careful soldering and heat shrinking......
