  • Nomad valve body upgrade from Wholesale Automatics

Had this conversion done this week.

I can say it was well worth the dollars spent and the shift quality is unbeliveable.
Very quick and positive shift. The whole set up just seems more responsive.

    Im happy with the result.
Transmission was totally flushed with full synthetic oil also.

Normally $1,295 fitted and serviced new oil etc
I opted for full synthetic and flush so it was $1,595

Did you get Wholesale Auto to do the work?

Very interested in this as it is my next intended mod, as soon as the warranty runs out its going in.

Did you get the manual lockup option?

And can you give us an update once you've had it a while and done some towing?

              Wholesale did the job
I didn't option the lock up as I will do this at a later stage.

I don't really do any towing but happy to give an update.
About to leave for the Simpson tomorrow so I will advise on how the modification goes over the trip
I have done the Simpson prior so I will see if there is any notable difference this time.

To get there kit with lockup and temp gauge. you are looking at around $2700 fitted.
That is what i was quoted for the 120 prado.

So I completed the Simpson and can now compare between standard auto and the nomad conversion.

Fuel consumption was the same so no gain there.
Shift quality has definitely changed and you know when she changes especially in low range
It changes very hard and fast in high and even harder in low range.
Climbed big red without an issue in both high and low range with the auto very quick to make a decision.

So to sum it all up.
Worth the money and it will make a difference so long as you don't mind the very direct and harder changes.
Don't believe it when they say smoother changes. The gear changes are are just faster and harder.

Yeah the Nomad Valve Body upgrade is good. Hopefully worth the outlay. They certainly make some easy money. Charged me a $100 to connect the two hoses for the transmission cooler that I installed. Hoses and fittings sitting in the ready position and everything. He did not even have to work out which line to connect it to. Bash plates removed and everything as easy as it could be. Ah well that's what you get for caring, ha. I did mine in March 2013 with synthetic oil and a cooler. Very happy as I tow a 900kg camper trailer and at high and low speed the transmission is running cool.

I was only thinking the other day that I should try to set the low range to start in 2nd, as the first gear change is harsh. Soooo much torque is on tap when changing from 1st low to 2nd low that the wheel spin can happen at steady throttle position of 2500 rpm. Not easy to anticipate when it is going to change gear and back off on the gas either. But that's what makes an auto automatic isn't it?

                    Cheers

I had a read of the web site and it talked about the valve body providing a manual solution to the soft shifts that the ECU gives.

It also says, quote: The transmission once fitted with the new Heavy Duty Valve Body can easily handle twice the power and torque while also greatly increasing the cars towing capabilities. All this with nice crisp shift points even while towing.

Sounds a bit suss as changing the valve body doesn't double the design parameters of the transmission.

Having said that people who fit the valve body seem pretty happy because it gives faster/crisper shifts. I've noticed that this happens through the ECU with the existing gearbox when you shift into low range so I wonder what happens with the new valve body in Low Range, must be super sharp changes.

Yeah not sure about double the power and torque, where am I going to get that sort of mumbo out of a 4 cylinder diesel. 800 nm of torque, don't think so. However that gear box, the A750F is found in V8 petrol Cruisers in Lexus variants. What I think that will happen is that people will be impressed with this statement and spend money on something that is built to handle vast amounts of power anyway.

What I do think will occur is that people will be impressed with benifits of cooler running with higher oil flow through the valve body and the sharp shift between gears. When towing or working your vehicle hard off road, you want the vehicle in gear not in a slushy transition from one to the other. This enhancement does this. The ECU tells the box when to change and the mechanical part then takes over to effect the decision. Hopefully the whole thing will last longer for synthetic oil and cooler running. Let you know in another couple hundred thousand kilometres. Cheers.

has anyone done this on a 2012 model or later, because there is a noticeable difference in shift quality between the 2010 model and the 2012 model. The new
low speed and high speed hesitation fixes, make a big difference.
stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats. Sidewinder`s Dual Battery isolator and rear power outlet kit. Pirana Battery tray, Hayman Reese towbar with Toyota wiring kit and Brains`s guard.

Well all I know is my prado creamed big red several times.
Sitting at the top while cruisers and patrols struggled their way up and failing.

The auto made a big difference to the performance of the prado so I reckon it was money well spent.
Comparing it to the last Simmo trip I can say its an improvement.

Just don't expect this smooth shift quality
It ain't smooth it's fast and sharp.
