Hi Andrew, when we head home from Darwin in early October we'll be going via the Olga's and are now keen on traveling the gunbarrel as well. I've been wanting to for years after reading a couple of Len's books.
After reading your trip report I can't wait.
How long did it take you to go from Warburton to Wiluna?

All Lens books are worth a read. Apart from the 6 well known "bush" books there is also a seventh lesser known book he wrote that was only published after his death. Its called around the world in 80 delays, I bought a copy directly of his wife Anne who also is unfortunately no longer with us.

As for the Gunbarrel, it was three days from Warburton to Wiluna, That was comfortable, others went past us like it was a race and no doubt they did it a bit quicker. The Further West you go on the Gunbarrel the better the road conditions get. You can pull of just about anywhere to camp but camp Beadell just East of Mount Beadell would be a good spot if you are in that neck of the woods at the right time of day, just pick up firewood before hand as its pretty scarce around the designated camp areas. Once past Carnegie there is a spot called Mingal Pool, that would be the pick of places to camp around that area, its right on the edge of the track and has an old shelter, see the pics below.








We got from Warburton to Wiluna on a tank of fuel comfortably as well, always Carnegie Station if you are in doubt.
