  • Caravans & Trailers on the GTG

We have had several inquiries about taking caravans to Talbotville. It is possible with a Prado but it will not be an easy drive for the vehicle or the driver. The climb from Harrietville to Dargo High Plains Rd is on a tight mountain road and steep in places, hard on the driveline on the way in and hard on brakes on the way out. The Dargo High Plains Rd is a high altitude 2WD Rd in the dry and can be corrugated in places. The last 7km down to Talbotville is a winding 1 - 10 decent on a rock base 2wd road. If your van is over 2000kg you probably should consider other options. Camper trailers of all types should be ok, do take precautions to avoid stone damage to the trailer and the back of your Prado.

Thanks Barajak for the information. Sounds like we will be fine with our camper trailer then.

The wife will appreciate the bed in the van. We just need to make sure those without vans are in front of use with vans for that bit of road.

I know it is hard to go without a motel on wheels when you get used to them and I was not trying to scare you out of bringing it, just inform those that do not know the roads. We will be in convoy with radio comms, with convoy procedure. The drive will be as easy as it can be.

Can I get some clarification regarding this thread and trailers. On the website, there's an option A and an option B. Option B is apparently not suitable for campers, so I'm wondering what this thread is actually talking about in terms of getting to Talbotville. The route described in post 1 above: Is that option A or B? Also, can we get some clarification on why option A isn't suitable for campers in particular. I've towed it many places, so it would be a shame if it were actually easily do-able with a camper, but not allowed?

          Thanks guys.

For everyone's info, my answers are not from the committee, they are from me to you as I understand it!

Post 1 here James is talking about the trailer route, it is ok for 4x4 trailers.
If you have a big caravan & it's raining that might be difficult.

The harder option (b) for non trailers is different & is a committee decision that that route is not suitable or trailers.
I have no opinion on it, I have not driven its entirety & don't own a camper trailer.
Happy to share my opinion after I have one.
Perhaps James can shed some more light, I hope this helps somewhat in the interim.

            ####.

Who is taking a trailer? & what is it?

              Hi guys & gals,

So who is taking a trailer on the gtg?

What sort of trailer is it? Is it full offroad? Or a caravan? Etc?

Just trying to get a rough gauge on how many.......

We will be taking our camper trailer. In an ideal world I would have a new one built for this event but that is looking unlikely. So chances are it will be our current one. Yes its full off road, I'll tow it pretty much anywhere (and have) that the Prado will go!

                Cheers Andrew

We have an off road camper trailer and it follows where we go in the Prado.

Offroad Camper will be following us too. I wouldn't take it down the hardest of hard tracks. Otherwise, it goes where the prado goes.

Oops I have not looked at this thread as often as I should have. The non trailer option back country drive is not suitable for trailers because it has places too steep. I know Prados are pretty good and with good tyres, good pressures and good driving skills you can go a long way but you are unlikely to get through in good weather with a trailer and no chance if its wet. We are talking steep here so if it does not work for you, you are likely to slide who knows where.
We will have options that you can take trailers on that may be challenging between Mansfield and Bright that take you over the top of the Alpine NP. All vehicles not going the back way will be driving down McMillan Rd as noted on the first post. Worth noting I have been there three times recently, each time with tyres at 25psi and low range and no trailer. Only road rated as 2wd that I use low range each time I use it.

Now the T van is a trailer with the sort of clearances needed in the high country unlike most off-road trailers that are made for flat country. But unless you turn the rig into a six wheel drive, ground clearance alone is not enough. When vehicles without trailers start spinning wheels, vehicles with half a ton or more out the back are nowhere to be seen.
