  • Looking at buying one of these cables soon for my D4D. Do i need one that supports K-line? there seems to be a fair range of cables available from $16 all the way to $80.....

The seller selling the $80 cable claims it is k-line compatible (firmware 2.04), but he sells a $50 cable that has older firmware but no k-line... Both have the latest V10.0.028 software which is supposidly 64bit

then theres the $30 and $16 sellers...

Finally got it working. sent an email to the seller and they remotely linked in to my machine yesterday evening and sorted it! All the way from China! Very good service from them, i totally recommend that if you get one of these systems off ebay buy from the seller OBD family.

            • After some googling about which cable to buy, I came across a few forum posts that stated a 2.0.4 cable is the "recommended" requirement and the better quality of the fake VCI cables that run the xhorse firmware. Apparently the majority of the cables through ebay are 1.4.1 firmware versions and considered cheap knockoffs of questionable quality that have limited functionality due to severely outdated firmware.

The latest version of techstream software 10.10.018 with installation instructions is here (http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35530).

The 2.0.4 cable scales82 and retroenduro are refering to is available here (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2015-Orig...item339fcbdc3a).

So is this the one I should buy? I've got not problem spending money on a better product but I'm no way tech savy. Is this better than the $30 version or is it more compatable to different laptops. I'd be using it on my dad's laptop which is 4 or 5 years old.
                Thanks Matt

                • Anyone know how this compares to what you buy from Baileys for $44?

Personally, I don't own one yet so can't say what you should or shouldn't buy, but the fact retroenduro has it confirmed working is probably a pretty good place to start. Hopefully scales will say the same. Like I said in the post, you want one with 2.0.4 firmware as these devices have different hardware internally to run the newer firmware revision. This is why the "cheap" copy ones will usually brick when trying to upgrade firmware from 1.4.1 to 2.0.4.

Apparently there are vendors selling the newer firmware versions on ebay/aliexpress for around the $30-50 mark, but unless you can confirm the firmware version with the seller before purchasing, there is a good chance you will end up with one of the cheap devices sold for a higher margin. You will also find that many of the sellers won't even know or tell you what the firmware version is on the cable they are selling and you can't rely on pictures, 99% of the time they are just ripped off another page and not the actual product they have to ship. This is the fun we have to deal with when purchasing dodgy counterfeit goods from china...

If you want a guaranteed working cable buy a Toyota one for $5000 plus. If you want an aftermarket cable that will definitely work for less $ get a "genuine" xhorse cable, these are very hard to find for sale and are now also counterfeited as well, sheesh... If you want a cheap knockoff cable that will most likely work get one with firmware 2.0.4 (which is the xhorse firmware on a clone cable). If you like playing Russian Roulette to save a few $ just purchase the first one you find listed on eBay.

On another note, apparently you need either of the first two if you wish to do an ECU flash but this is probably well beyond the realms of what a home mechanic should be doing anyway, and that is assuming you can even find the software to flash to the ECU.

                    • I'll have to take a look at mine - I guess its the cheapy knock off. But what exactly is the difference. Like RWO stated, I wont be looking to flash the ECU, as long as I can read and clear codes, check injector feedback and disable my seatbelt alarm, I am happy.

Apart from the "quality is better" rumour..... any other differences? The only complaint I have is speed at which it takes to communicate at times.

Internal memory of the ARM CPU is insufficient to run the new firmware (hence why they can't be upgraded) and would also influence the communication speed of the device. The 1.4.1 firmware is an alpha release by xhorse that is supposedly buggy, said to be suitable for monitoring settings but less reliable for changing things.

But if it works for you, that's great the quality varies like all chinese knock-offs. Some are reliable some less so.

Personally, I am just being extra cautious and doing plenty of research before purchasing a $20 dodgey chinese knock-off cable from ebay to plug into my $60K plus motor car and start changing settings. What do Toyota charge for a new ECU these days?

                        • Ok . Well IT is not my forte, I'm a bit of a gumby with computers. I'm not even sure what firmware is but my old man has an old and a new laptop . The old one had vista ultimate & his new one will have windows 10 installed in the next couple of weeks . Does this one with a 2.0.4 stuff suit the new windows 10 or am I better off with something proven on an older system . Which is the best techstream type solution

                          Thanks Matt
