Interested in an answer to this too.

Also, do you blokes buy them off Toyota?
Can you source genuine filters online at competitive prices?

My light came on at 49000k the other day and the dealer charged $110 for filter.
Received the same story from Toyota that this is not a service item.

I do not accept that it is OK for Toyota to NOT replace these as a scheduled service item. It seems every 30 or 40k is necessary - especially given the hand grenade reputation the D4Ds have earned (going by Pradopoint owners comments).

If we have to pay an extra $110 every other service that's much better than paying the $9000 for short motor mentioned in the Injector thread.

100% agree....should be change during the major services to prevent injector issues. Changed my filter. Has instructions on the side of the filter. Just use the pump on top to fill it up before starting the engine. Only way I could get the light to go out was to start the engine with the top connector disconnected wait 15 seconds then plug it in while the engine is running. Now light out and working fine. Still worried about the injectors as they are quieter now the fuel is flowing correctly. Will need to test the values now which means buying a Tech Stream or similar.

I would be replacing mine every 40k, and recomend customers do the same. We have had a few that say by the book only services, if you ignore the valve clearances until it needs injectors (120-150k) and do the fuel filter at 40k it works out cheaper and better for the vehicle. In my oppinion the valve clearances don't need to be checked as often as Toyota claim (they are very rarely out) and the fuel filter should have a service interval.

So I have 46K on the clock and this morning the fuel filter light came on, no buzzer or flashing. On my 30k service I asked Toyota to fit an additional fuel filter, thinking I was going to get a Donaldson type filter but they installed a cheaper $12 mickey mouse fuel filter post the toyota filter. I am around 60km from the nearest Toyota dealer, know I have a fuel filter post the problem one should I be ok to drive tot he dealer and get it changed?
          Thanks for any advice

Droid drain the water from the under bonnet filter and then drive to the dealer but only if the light is off. Instructions in the manual. Water and common rail systems are a bad combination. Actually water and any fuel system isn't good.

Ah just had this happen to me (car has one 55,000kms). Was returning home and about 10kms away. Fuel was low so the fill up light came on..then as i pulled away from a junction (fair boot-full of go) the light came on and stayed on. Slammed on the brakes, pulled over and cut the engine, checked the fuel manager for water - none so googled pradopoint..turns out yep i need a new filter - phew. So nursed it the last 10km and its now parked up waiting for one to arrive ($45 from fleabay for genuine from reputable Aussie seller ). Not paying 250 bucks for some 16yr old apprentice to do it....

Anyway what a stupid system...what happened to preventative maintenance???!?! what if i was in wup wup when that happened? Even with the light on i imagine the fuel pump is having to work harder thus causing more wear...From now on it will get changed every 40,000kms. Seriously though what a crap policy Toyota.....

Now the questions is should i change my fuel manager 20 micron pre filter too? Im thinking yes but it was only fitted 2 months ago...

Nar, the fuel manager filter will most likely be fine. Have a look at it when changing the factory filter but it should be good.

ok so got my filter but it has a different part number. it was sold for a 120 or 150 D4D engine part no. 23390-30180 but its a tad shorter than the one that came out (part no 23390-30350). maybe its the 120 d4d one and they changed the design slightly for the 150? is this going to be an issue? its exactly the same element inside and everything fits up fine (had to fit it so i could get into work this morning). light got reset fine and engine runs fine. Just worried that it may not have the same filtration rate etc.

Ok update - just rang toyota and these are both fine for the 150 prado. phew

I had the fuel light coming on for about a week, I just kept resetting to light. Pain in ass.. But once I changed BOTH fuel filters, under bonnet and one under the car near tank, the lights never come back on! Easy to do and well worth doing your self! Bugger paying $100 ph labour charges.

I had ours changed at last service, 30,000kms at Port Augusta Toyota.
Price to fit the new in the service was $90.00 from memory plus filter. Never asked price for fitting, just told them to fit new filter during service. Last service they will do for me. $90.00 for 15mins work, was listed as a separate item to other service charges.
                            Cheers

I've just changed my fuel filter (150 gxl) engine bay. Followed the instructions in this thread I.e engine off. Changed filter. Left sensor lead on top of filter assembly disconnected. Sensor lead that goes to the bottom of the filter connected. Started engine. Whilst engine running reconnected top sensor lead. Yellow fuel system light still on. I also have a water watch fuel monitor installed before the filter. WW has been installed for 12 months. WW is not meant to restrict flow though so doubt this is the cause. Also - no idea what state the filter between the two tanks is in perhaps this is the cause. The main filter in the engine bay was really quite clean when I removed it. Vehicle has 90000 on the clock. Any suggestions please.

                                Issue now resolved.
The wire on the top of the filter housing is connected to the Fuel Filter Warning Switch. The switch has a diaphragm under it and when there is negative pressure (eg a clogged filter) the dash light is activated. No idea if this can get stuck however I did the following to see if I could finally get the warning light to turn off.

With engine off disconnect the wire to the fuel filter warning switch again. Disconnect the fuel outlet hose from the fuel filter housing. I tapped the top of the warning switch gently with the pliers I used on the hose clamp. I then pumped the pump on top of the filter housing a couple of times expelling some fuel. I then reconnected the outlet hose and gave the pump a few more pumps until it was really firm. Time to start the vehicle. As soon as I started the vehicle I reconnected the fuel filter switch wire. Success !!! This time the fight finally went off.
