  • Jamie's Prado 120 D4D

    Hi All,

    I hope you enjoy my rig build up, I have learnt a lot from other's posts and felt I should post up my own build.

    This is my second Prado, 1st was a manual 2003 120 GXL TD, this is an auto 2007 120 D4D GXL, 86K kms with Option pack 1, so has TRC, side curtain airbags and climate control.

    I remember spending hours on the Prado forums back in 2006 when I had the first Prado, it wasn't pradopoint but something similar. Anyway kept some of the gear from that Prado, like my Piranha battery tray, IPF900 Extremes, GME UHF / antenna and an ARB smart solenoid.

    We have a 16 month old boy and we love camping so bought the Prado for mostly touring. We did the High Country last year and loved it, so now want to make an effort to get out there every year. I've set myself a goal for getting this bog standard Prado ready for the High Country this November.

    Current mods since purchase (some yet to be fitted):
    ARB Deluxe Winch Bar
    ARB ARB UVP
    ARB 3/4 Tradesman roof rack
    OME 2" suspension lift
    Safari Snorkel
    Hayman Reese towbar
    Genuine Prado Alloys
    Tigerz11 Grande 12000lb winch Dyneema rope
    IPF 900 Extreme x 2
    AMTS wheel spacer and light mount
    W602C ebay head unit
    ABR Prado switches
    Bosch aerotwin wiper blades
    Hilux wiper jets
    2012 Hilux bonnet scoop
    Piranha Dual Battery Tray
    SuperCharge 105amp dual battery
    Engel 40L Fridge

    Wish list:
    Sliders
    UHF (remote Unit)
    Catch Can
    Raycor 230R secondary fuel filter
    Extended Diff and Trans breathers
    Recovery Bridal
    Cabin LED Light upgrade
    MaxTraxII (maybe)

    This is the beast at ARB this morning, had to drop it off at 05:45 so I could make it to work on time...

    The first thing it needed was a towbar, so fitted the Hayman Reece T02912RW with the Toyota wiring Harness PZQ61-60110

    Also installed my Piranha battery tray with a new ALLROUNDER MRV70L 760CCA 105AH. I used some 1-3mm neoprene rubber on the parts of the tray that contact the thin body metal...

      ARB said they wouldn't charge me to install my Tigerz11 Grande 12000LB Winch. The Prado is with them getting an OME lift and Deluxe Winch bar fitted (they are also supplying only, a Safari Snorkel and ARB underbody protection). Rotated the gearbox so it wouldn't foul on the AirCon hose, thanks Andrew(AJ120). I didn't regrease the gearbox, partly because I didn't have the time and also because I plan to pull it out after the High Country trip and regrease then....

                How did you go fitting the 2 bolts at the rear of the chassis cross member? Was the tab for the 7 pin plug long enough?

                  Thanks Gents, you know what they say about big boots....... big feet D4D i have an LED lenser torch that I sat inside the rear chassis crossmember, then unwound the supplied coil on the threaded plate so i could position it for the bolt to feed straight in. Hope that makes sense. The harness was excellent, being genuine the 2 dustproof plugs fit perfect and the length was plenty. I didn't cut anything so i can re-use the large round if ever towing anything with electric brakes as the large round has a thicker gauge cable specifically for this. I have only cable tied off the 7 pin flat at the moment as I want to bend up a bracket to hold the 7 pin flat plug and an Anderson plug. I want them to sit on a plate so they don't get broken off when rear clearance is an issue.

                  Got the Prado back from ARB this afternoon, sits a little higher now...

                  Before (save you from scrolling up)

                  And the Tigerz11 winch mounted in the new bar... (need to drop down to Tigerz11 in Silverwater for an offset fairlead the standard one was no good)

                        Your HR towbar sticks out way more than mine???

                        Re your bar fitting, looks like they didn't paint the inner guard black...

                          Mate that bar looks great, looks like you are really putting together a capable truck.

                          Re the wheels you should be able to get some black 17 x8 steelies such as dynamic or gecko or others too for closer to $100 per wheel.

                          They are a bit heavier, but don't forget the GX came standard with steelies so weight shouldn't be an issue.

                            Went for the 885 Coil / 90000 Strut on the front and the 896 Coil / 60005 Shock on the back. It is definitely a firmer ride but feels more sure footed. I will have my Engel mounted permanently at the back and when away will have 2 home made draws bolted in so i am happy with my choice. Heading to Sussex Inlet next weekend so will get out onto some fire trails to test it out then let ARB know at the 1000km suspension check. Hight Figures below:

                            Before
                            FL = 745 FR = 740
                            RL = 770 RR = 775

                            After
                            FL = 798 FR = 800
                            RL = 835 RR = 840

                            I thought the HR bar came out a bit too far, i couldn't have fitted it any different so it looks like that's how it's meant to be, time will tell if it gets in the way. Painting the inner guard black, i must have missed this post before getting it fitted, i won't fill the gap with rubber so may look at spraying it later on. My worry with steelies was the unsprung weight factor and the concern about the rear diff getting more of a shock, maybe i'm over thinking it...

                            Also picked up a set of ARB UVP, bit surprised at how wide they are or are not in the area of the CV's, would have liked a bit more coverage there..
