Just for anyone else's interest if they are trying to diagnose a similar problem, in my case it seems it was as simple as having the secondary fuel filter replaced (the under-body one next to the tailshaft). Have now done 100-200km since changing filter and problem has not occurred. Fingers crossed

Here's a pic of the diesel and crud that was pulled out of the filter - mechanic's thoughts are that the filter was so blocked it was causing intermittant fuel starvation causing the engine to stutter and stall.

no, that's just the dirty diesel that came out of the filter when some compressed air was blown through it.. black and lots of particulates..

Had a similar problem with my 07 120 series not long after I bought it, (new). Memory is a little rusty, but it turned out to be a cracked cover over either the main tank pump, or the jet pump that delivers fuel from sub tank to main tank. When fuel levels were low enough, it would suck air in through the crack.
If need be, I can go back through my records and get the exact details.

            Cheers.

I have been dealing with a problem for the last few months and it is directly related to FUEL NOT TRANSFERRING FROM THE REAR TANK TO THE FRONT.

Have a read of this thread here... http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...Problem-diesel
              And another similar problem here...http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...ulty-fuel-pump

The information is relevant in the above threads with exact symptoms and circumstance, but in the early 120's, there is no transfer pump in the tank, just the venturi.

The car has stalled 3 times now in about 3 months. And Im talking stalling with semi trailers right up our clackers...

On the first occasion, I pumped the fuel primer for about 15 minutes and it wouldn't go hard. I then removed the fuel suppy line and blew down it and there was no bubbling or resistance. I diagnosed no fuel in the front tank.
Even though the sub tank was 1/2 full, the front tank was dry - there fore no fuel was transferring. So after diagnosing no fuel on the side of the road, I added 2 jerry cans full and we were on our merry way again.

I then took the time using PP to research the problem and I took the time to remove both tanks and inspect the system.
              What I found was... Nothing!!!
The tanks were spotlessly clean, the small guaze filter was clean and the verturi tested ok... even all of the fuel lines were clear.
The whole project had me and my diesel fitter mate Chris scratching our heads.

So after more PP research, I read this thread http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...breather-maybe

To eliminate the possibility of a blocked breather, I simply removed it.
Since this problem has reoccurred, I can assume the issue is not with the tank breather.

After having cleaned the tanks, tested the venturi and removed the breather, I let the car run the fuel down to the sub tank and BINGO the car stalled again.
So on this second occasion, I simply pumped the fuel primer, the primer went hard so we started the car up and off we went.
That break down lasted the best part of 2 minutes.

I was out to try to find some consistency with the break downs, so I filled both tanks again.
This time we used all of the fuel all the way down to the reserve light coming on with out stalling!!!
Beauty - she has sorted her self out!!! NOT.

Now tonight I get the phone call again, Drew the car has broken down... Ahh SHIT -I thought it was all good.
I told her to open the bonnet and pump the fuel primer.
Bata bing Bata boom, the primer went hard, she started the car started and she drove all the way home.

So this issue is really concerning me as each time this F#@?ing car has stalled it has been on the Bruce Highway and the missus has been alone on 2 of them occasions. Losing power steering and brakes is a big concern for me.

              NOW GUYS...

              Breather is removed.
              Venturi tested ok
              Tanks clean as a whistle.

CAN ANYONE SHINE SOME LIGHT ON THIS ONE???

              Cheers Drew
Hi all I had a similar prob in my 07 D4D prado with random engine stall 40000ks ago (very scary towing a 2tonn caravan) all good now thanks to rear fuel filter change (it had never been changed & this was at 125000ks) but what really fixed it for me was adding a fuel additive Diesel Power by Chemtech sold at Supercheap etc I'm sure there others just as good but I have used this for the last 40000ks towing a van around Aus (lots of dirty fuel in the outback) no probs since then & it has more power & is a lot quieter good luck

Do you guys use standard diesel or the higher quality ones like Caltex Vortex diesel?
