  • Fog light globe upgrade?

Has anyone increased the wattage of the fog lights? In my 150 they seem quite useless. Was wondering if it worth increasing wattage or if would cause problems.

The fog lights ARE quite useless. I am looking to replace mine with either an LED or HID driving light for bush work. So far the only thing that is close is the Narva LED light which is more of a daytime running light. I am still researching. Part of the problem is the factory fogs are oval and the bar is slanted so the fog light is offset. Maybe not a big deal because I want to light up the sides of the road but fitment may be difficult if you want to shine straight ahead. The lights seem to be 90 x 100 so a 90mm light should fit. I say should because I haven't test fitted an option yet.

Steve those look perfect but sadly they are too big.

After a bit more research and some scary pricing I am going get a pair of Narva 71982s.

        http://www.narva.com.au/products/browse/assemblies-2

The LED or HID options are at best price $375 each. I will look at fitting an HID kit and an LED for the wedge globe.

I couldn't find a retailer who had the Hella light but from a bit of googling the pricing was similar to the local price for the Narva. Lights were cheaper but freight was nasty. I am getting a pair for just under $250. Various places have HID conversions from $75 to a few hundred. Newpro HID is $150(?).

Rather than replace the lights, I was wondering if you cn change to globes with a higher wattage.

You could do that but the shape of the reflector isn't that useful beyond a short spread beam. I have ordered the Narva lights so when they arrive I will fit them up and do a review. Ended up getting the pair for under $200.

I haven't picked up my replacement Narva lights yet. When they arrive I will post up a comparison.

Hi, I had that problem as well with the standard ARB fog lights.
I fixed it buy removing the ARB light and pulling apart, removing light lens.
Cutting the back of the black plastic ARB holder, keeping the outer rim,
Removing (with either or hacksaw or cutting disc on 4"grinder) the 4 screw (OME) lugs on the Toyota fog light.
Fitting the modified Toyota light in to the inside of the ARB light sheave, that way you have the adjustment of up and down by the ARB screw.
I used a soldering iron to heat up the plastic to bond the two pieces together. (they have been in for about 8 months) and they are so much better design of reflector and bulb wattage, they are worth the time that it took (about 2 hours)
You can still use the Toyota fine adjustment, but you need to do before the side plates are re-installed.

Well I pulled all the front naughty bits off to get at the fog lights and removed those yesterday and discovered that the Narva driving lights aren't a straight bolt up for the fogs.

I made up the inner bracket from a piece of 90 x 90 x 20 x 1.6 gal channel I had lying around (this bracket has to be an angle) and bolted the light in place. Then I wedged the light in position with a few strategically placed pencils and cable ties and measured the second bracket with is a simple offset set of 4 holes. The beauty of the mounting on the Narva lights is that you are able to screw the long threads back and forth to set the light in the correct position. Somehow sitting with my head in the bullbar I cocked up the measurement and make the bracket the wrong size, the two sets of holes were 7mm wider apart than they should be. By this time the rain was driving into the carport and it was pretty cold and miserable. So I put the fogs back in (without wiring) and put it back together. The day wasn't a total loss I fitted the Monster bump stops, the Superior sway bar blocks and rotated the tyres while it was up in the air. I have the brackets episode 1 and will make up some new ones today hopefully depending on commitments (not mine just ones made on my behalf). I will draw up the brackets should anyone else want to go this way too.

I made up brackets episode 2 but the Prado went AWOL and only arrived back late this afternoon. I will test fit next weekend.

I won't post drawings / sketches until I am sure I got them right. Pretty simple to fabricate if you have a CNC milling machine in the shed. And easy enough with a hacksaw and drill and files like I used... Basically 50 x 50 x 3 aluminium angle with the bits I don't need cut off and the same from a bit of 50 x 3 flat.

The paint is just so the brackets don't show behind the open hole where the light sits.

Didn't get to this today as planned because my diff locks were ready to be picked up, freshly restored and reframed I couldn't wait to get it up on the wall. Prado is going walkies most of tomorrow so not sure if I will get access.

Ooooh what's up. Best possum run off with a cat? I think you will see a few of us are upgrading to put dedicated track lights on not long distance fogs. I am also thinking of fitting an LED light bar under the roofrack but that will only be useful when the roofrack is on the car!
