Only the rear links. I am running the Airbagman Airbags which are taller and haven't even looked like popping out (touch wood....) If you're concerned about the airbags popping out, have a look at amts 120 Prado Grande airbag spacer thread in the For Sale section2004 V6 Grande. BLACK -

Runva 11XP Install
Finally had some time to myself today, so I took the opportunity to replace the old Magnum 9K winch with the Runva 11XP that I picked up in the group buy early last year (yes I know, been slack...) I have been meaning to replace the Magnum for sometime. Predominantly to change over to Dyneema rope due to it's safety aspects (if the rope breaks it just drops) and it's weight opposed to cable. Whilst I could've just replaced the wire rope with Dyneema on the existing winch, I had read that the Magnum gets quite hot and not suitable for rope, so that was the clincher. Also when I serviced the winch last I found a lot of water ingress and corrosion in the gearbox. It cleaned up well and the gearbox is working ok, but I am unsure of the motor and with a trip to the cape this year, it was good reason to go for the Runva 11XP.
Dropping the old Magnum didnt take too long. Working on my own i simply disconnected all the cables (All battery connections first of course) and using a couple of Cam buckle straps around the Sahara bar hoop, lowered the winch to the ground with plenty of room to spare.
Prior to installing the Runva, I grabbed some split tubing for extra protection for the cables to the battery and also the colourful cables to the winch. It was a squeeze to get the cables in through the existing hole but got there eventually. The only issue I had was with the bolts for the Hawse Fairlead which seem to be about 10mm too short so I'll pick some up during the week to finish it all off. I also have a stubby freespool lever on backorder as when the lever is in the freespool position, it hits the bottom of the bonnet when closed. (not that it should happen). The standard fairlead is suitable for the Sahara bar, however it does leave an unsightly gap up the top, so I will most likely use the Offset one.
Just need the Fairlead fitted up once I get the longer bolts.
Split tubing installed and neatly cable tied in place. I also rotated the gearbox prior to installing so the freespool lever is easily accessible (stubby lever on backorder)
Cables protected through the bar. No room for anything else believe me!

Once I have the winch installed, I intend on doing away with the winch hook and installing one of these from the US. Factor55 Flatlink. Comes in a range of colours - black, blue, grey, red and silver (I'm ordering the silver cause it is easiest to see).

So I finished up my winch install tonight. I picked up the stubby toggle which (sort of) clears everything. The jury is out whether I'll keep it or use the original. I also grabbed some longer bolts to install the Offset Hawse Fairlead. Just need to get the Factor55 Flatlink as per my previous post. These aren't cheap though so may need to wait a couple of weeks...
All that was left to do was wire up the isolation switch which I had setup with the Magnum. Even more important with the Runva as this winch includes a wireless remote and I'd hate to have the kids rummaging through the glovebox and having a play with the buttons with god awful funny noises coming from the front of the Prado!
I already have a twin cable running from my switch on the dash beside the 2nd Start button all the way through to the winch control box. (I'll get a better switch one of these days...)
To isolate the wired and wireless remote from foul or accidental play, find the active feeds for the remote /s. As you can see they are quite easy to find as they have big red arrows beside them! This terminal is the 12V +ve terminal from the battery. Remove these 2 wires and place 1 leg of the twin from your isolation switch onto the 12V feed.
The returning wire from the isolation switch gets joined to these 2 wires, so the feed to the remote /s are now switched.
I prefer to solder, (not very tidily I might add, but it's a good, solid joint that wont vibrate loose.)
I then tape up and heat shrink so it's well insulated.
All done! But before I closed the control box up I sprayed some electrical spray stuff (CRC 2-26) to prevent any moisture or corrosion. I also pulled the boots back and gave the terminal posts on the winch motor a liberal spray also. The Magnum posts were on top of the motor whereas with the Runva they are underneath. Something to watch out for as the boots will be subject to filling up with water if fording through water. Just another post trip item to add to the list!Last edited by craigm; 27-04-2018, 04:15 PM.2004 V6 Grande. BLACK -

Well the Grande finally made it to print... (Pat Callinan's 4X4 Adventures issue 014). A few of the fellow Members in the For Sale threads get a bit of a mention too!
And a calendar worthy shot if I had taken it...
