  • Convoy procedures

Is this something we should have as a sticky?
    Good for the newbies.

    1. Each Convoy will contain a “Trip Leader” who will lead the convoy and coordinate the trips activities for the group.
    2. The Trip Leader is to brief the convoy members at the commencement of the trip on the days events and organise the convoys members to maximise control and communication.
    3. The Trip Leader will advise the convoy whenever they are to enter a new track or road.
    4. The Trip Leader is to decide when the convoy is to disperse.
    5. Each convoy shall contain a nominated “Tail End Charlie (TEC)”.
    6. TEC will advise the trip leader whenever they enter a new track or road.
    7. If there is a breakdown, TEC will wait and organise assistance.
    8. When travelling along busy thoroughfares, leave sufficient room for other vehicles to overtake safely.
    9. When turning into a new track or road, each member is to ensure that the vehicle directly behind him or her has identified the correct route. They will acknowledge by flashing their lights.
    10. Each member is to maintain their position in the convoy at all times, except in unavoidable circumstances and then after having advised the Trip Leader. (Convoy members should identify themselves to the drivers of the vehicles directly in front, and behind them when the convoy is established.)
    11. At a river, creek or water crossing, each member is to wait until the vehicle preceding has negotiated the obstacle before proceeding.
    12. Avoid travelling too close to the vehicle when ascending or descending steep hills. At the discretion of the Trip Leader, the individual convoy members may be required to wait until the preceding indicates that it is clear to proceed.
    13. In the interest of conservation, convoy members are to remain on gazetted or marked tracks.
    14. No vehicle shall leave the convoy unless the Trip Leader has been informed.
    15. A safe distance should be maintained whilst recovery equipment is in use, this especially applies to winch cables and snatch straps.

Most clubs have a set of Convoy Rules that are provided to club members to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey. Below is a sample set of convoy rules and tips:

    Sample Convoy Rules:
•BE ON TIME - To depart for trip- make yourself known to the trip leader on arrival.
•Make sure YOU sign the attendance (TRIP) sheet -Your responsibility, no one else's.
•All vehicles MUST be road registered and in a roadworthy and safe condition.
•All Members vehicles MUST be securely fitted with at least one tow hook both front and rear, and carry a Snatch-Urn Strap & 'D'Shackle.
•The Driver in front is totally responsible for the vehicle following, and MUST wait at all intersections, where the convoy turns, for the following vehicle. (Please use common sense, as we don't mean every little side-track.)
•In Hilly country or water crossings or other type obstacles, you MUST allow the vehicle in front to clear the hill or obstacle and the track is clear before you can proceed. Don't too follow close.
•Vehicle in front must notify by radio the vehicle following, when the track is clear.
•Members Vehicles MUST be fitted with either an AM or UHF, - working - CB Radio for safety, before starting a trip. NO RADIO-NO TRIP-NO EXCEPTIONS.
•Always leave Gates as you find them. The 2nd vehicle to open and close the gate and then rejoin the convey in front of Tail End Charlie, unless otherwise directed by Trip Leader (please pay the gate opener as you pass)
•Always pull off to the side, and leave tracks clear, where possible.
•Visitors are welcome, however you are responsible for your visitor.
•Never leave the convoy until you have informed the Trip Leader or Tail End Charlie and they have responded.
    • Domestic Animals must not be taken on a trip or run if we are entering a State Forest or National Park area.
•Club radio channels are 12 on both AM & UHF C.B. Radios.

    Sample Tips:
The following tips for safe 4 wheel driver are provided as a guide only.

Before you venture off the beaten path, you need some basic tips. The first and best tip is simple join a club and under take an accredited Basic Four Wheel driving course.

Most clubs require you to have some basic recovery and safety items before you can go on a club trip.

    These are:
•A Four wheel drive in good sound safe and legal condition.
    •A snatch-um-strap.
•A tow hook both front and rear of the vehicle.
•A rated bow shackle or two.
•A Citizens Band Radio - either Am or UHF (However the UHF is by far the better unit.)

But you are asking what is a Four-wheel drive? The simplest definition is one that has a duel rang transfer case. Although many of the so called softer all wheel drive vehicles are very good and will take you most places they are not a true Four Wheel Drive.
