If ARB chucks a fit, I will have a go myself. I just hate sliding around under cars. Changing the oil and filter is about the scope of my competence.
If you were in Adelaide, I would have said bring it over.

I have Prado 2008 v6 GCC version and today I noticed some noise coming out from rear suspension. I observed that the drive of my car turned bumpy so I checked the height which was lower than usual and in the control it was showing as "N". I then increased the height to "Hi", and then it worked well...after sometime the control stopped functioning and the noise coming continuously as something is leaking. I want your expert advice on what could be the issue. Is it suitable to drive to take the car to workshop? Thank you

This happened recently and somebody told me that this is air suspension is leaked and compressor is functioning but today the controls are not working which earlier it used to work though air was leaking.
The leak is probably getting too bad now and the computer has likely disabled the compressor.

When my airbag burst, the rear was on the bumpstops. The compressor won't fire up. You should be fine driving slowly to the workshop, but your best bet is to ring ahead to see if they have new airbags in stock.

The other thing you can do is perform emergency repairs on the leak using rescue tape or self-amalgamating tape. This is if it is only a small leak. It will at least allow you to drive around while waiting for new airbags to arrive.

I'd be there mate. I need a Guru.

ARB are installing the bags next Thursday. They had to order a couple parts to do the job. They also mentioned Toyota are going to lend them the clip tool since they sent the car there.

At first I didnt ask ARB how much it was going to cost. The first suspension shop said it is only an hours work tops. He was only going to charge $110.

ARB just told me it will be $280 plus the $40 extras. $320 in total. I just about shit myself. Probably won't be back if they are going to be like that.

Anyway, I just want the job done now, and at least the parts were over half price, so I'm still saving $500 if I'd gone with the Toyota service center.

A lot to be gained by doing your own work.

Not sure what parts they need. It is a straight swap. If they used the tool, it won't damage any parts.

Hi Guys,i have spent 3 days pulling the back end of my Prado apart.Reservoir pulled down, checked and rebuilt.Compressor removed checked(electrically check, runs when connected to battery),relays changed, fuses checked.Discounted battery for 1 hr to rest the ECU,I am pulling whats left of my hair out.The compressor will not start for love or money.

Thanks for all the reply's.I rest the suspension ECU by bridging the pins in the diagnostic port with the number 4 and 13 pins and that got the compressor running.Cheers.

In short heres what I did this day:
*started engine- ran , compressor started but no change to height and air bags not filled.
*removed compressor and remote pawered and chaecked- compressor ran but not producing suffieient air (supply side).
*removed water trap (which sits abovethe compressor- black plastic cylinder) Removed it's lid and found the filters to be blocked and a damp feeling. Inside is on both ends are filters and between these are a spring. surrounding the spring (Trapped between the filters appears to be "hydrogel /) moisture beads which spilt out onto the floor.
                    * I replaced the filters with some face mask filters, cut to size and through away the hydrogels. The spring was rusty so I figured they were past use by date -also the filters were damp, some rust marks- so I figured this could be the issue!.
                    * I cleaned the water trap cannister up and put it back together using some Air tool oil to lube things up.
*Put everthing back in the vehicle and started up- still no fix.
*I decided to remove the intake hose from the compressor and found there was some "blowback".. the air seemed to be going the wrong way!
*I removed the solenoid on the feed side of the compressor and it checked out ok.
                    -
After some furious scratching of the head,.. I figured everything was working but air was simply not been blown the correct way!

I then decided if it's not been blown the right way then I should help it blow the right way- I disconnected the feed line hose before the compressor , which has some simple "spring clip" clamps retaining it- (When it was removed you could feel air blowing out by holding your thumb over the end.
So I started the engine- once again the compressor fired up,.. while this was happening I shoved the air gun down the hole of the Intake line... suddenly there was a couple of distinc sound changes.. I removed the nozzel and felt the air hose-- to my amazement it was NOW SUCKING!!! Yippeee..
I stuffed the air gun nozzell in again and removed it- Yes success the compressor was finally now sucking air from the intake line and not exhausting it!

I have checked the height control u, down, all works.
took it for a drive and everything is how it should be!.

So... after all that what was the problem (Other than the original air bag leak)....

Not sure... will have to Ponder on this one with a few Brewskis...
I'm thinking a valve/ solenoid was simply stuck in the wrong position and no amount of scan tool diagnostic, change this or that was going to fix it.

Thanks to all for comments and interest. I have taken some pics along the way so I may post them in a summary post if it helps others.
                    The final tally of costs-
I got airbagit air bags delivered from the USA for $450aud. I paid $130 to the mechanic for the diagnostic. all up $580 fix.
Don't even start to discuss my time......

                    hi Dazz,

i have the same issue as yours...and manage to fix it..Thanks for your post

Thank you all for the posts - I have had similar issues, Prado like a bouncy castle, riding on bump stops. Decided to be rid of the rear TEMS and put aftermarket shocks in but wanted to retain airbags. Original airbags split through age and replaced (not Air Bag Man), but they would not inflate and I had no L-N-H control. Compressor ran on external power, but still no inflation.
I managed to inflate the bags manually, enough to get the car of the bump stops and become driveable.
Reset ECU (jumping pins 4 and 13 in Diagnostic Port) and now all is working again.
I think that the relay / reservoir must contain enough back pressure when the bags are inflated, to operate a solenoid....when the bags split and most air is lost, there is not enough back pressure to keep the system happy.
These posts and many hours of research and reading have, no doubt, saved me $$$. Thanks again.

Hi every one, I run a small repair shop down in Jamaica west indies and I have a problem with an 02 prado using air suspension, getting DTC C1741 & C1751. The rear suspension is resting on the buffer rubbers now so it's bouncing all over. Used a launch scanner and activated air compressor and heard it working. Checked the relay and it's working but there is no switched voltage going to it, only alternator voltage, the grounds are good so I'm about to check the 50amp fuse. If this checks out good I'd assume it's the air suspension controller as that's what would signal the relay on and off when the interior switch is activated. Does anyone here knows where this controller is located, any meaningful help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Col, when resetting your ECU, did you have the ignition on?

Hello, I just wanted to say thank you to this thread and all members especially DAZZ and AMTS. I experienced the same problem of the compressor not turning on and the height control not functioning L-N-H control.
we followed the diagnostic box method (inside the engine bay for the 120 series Pardo) of crossing the pins 4 and 13 to get the compressor to run again. I just want to clarify which pins to use as they are not numbered.

PINs to cross are the E1 and TC pins, connect them with a wire or anything suitable with the ignition off, then turn on the ignition without starting the engine, you will see the engine light flashing, leave it on for about 30 seconds and turn off the ignition. Remove the cross cables and start the engine, if done correctly you should hear the compressor starting and the L-N-H control should be working again.

However the car turns of the compressor for a reason so you should replace those airbags or lines ASAP

car we fixed was a TZ trim 2003 Japanese import with 3,4 petrol engine (5VZ-FE)
