I have had both of mine crack, I have had mine welded and made apron braces for both batteries, no signs of cracks yet, I still have the patch in the workshop that I have not put in yet. I would agree bracing the top of the battery would prevent it, if you get a car with a cracked guard just put your hand on top and rock the battery and watch the crack move. bit of a shame that this was not a factory revision.

    • My aux battery was braced when fitted pre delivery. 150k so far no cracks so far, which I am very pleased about.

Is your starter battery braced also? Mine cracked on the passenger side which is where the starter (original) battery is, not the drivers side where the aux battery is.

              • Bracing doesn't actually transfer the load, all it does is possibly stop some minor movement. End result is same stress on the stress point. I discussed this in detail somewhere when I first raised the cracked guard issue on the 150.

From my research when it first happened the cracking appears to be caused by vibration such as from corrugated roads. There may be some benefit in placing the battery on some heavy vibration suppression foam, as it smooths out the vibration load on the guard. I did this and it hasn't done any harm.

Incidentally my guards with patch kit and weld have stood up to 3 more years with no further issues. Hopefully not jinxing myself!

                • Hi guys
Can someone who has puchased or fitted the patch kit for the 150 Prado from Toyota please confirm for me that it contains only one sheet metal patch per side.
On a side note the bolts and nuts are still available. Just purchased the kit $358.65 in total , nuts, bolts, plastic inner guard clips and two metal patches.
                  Regards SAPRADO

                  • The earlier 150 don't have the revised inner fender design so yours may well be like my 120 where I installed four plates.

My 150 repair only has 1 metal patch per side mounted under the inner guard.

                      • Thought I should update what is going on.

Managed to get it in to the Toyota dealer and the service guy took some photos and then disappeared out the back for a bit. Comes back and said he needed some more photos. Whilst walking out to the car he mentioned it was common problem with the auxiliary battery, I told him thats awesome but this is on the OEM battery side, not the aux side. He took some more photos then disappeared again.

Next he returns with the service manager for a look. Same as above, who installed your aux battery, its a common problem. I said, yep I would agree with you but this is on the other side of the car, nothing to do with the aux battery... The service manager seemed to think due to it being on the passenger side it should be covered.

Next day dealer rings, you will need a quote from a panel beater before they can submit the claim to Toyota (which I find absurd, either you will cover it under warranty or you won't. I don't understand how a quote changes this). Anyway I got the quote to get it fixed, so now just waiting for an official response from Toyota.

Toyota Response: Took it for an inspection yesterday, initially told me I had to book it in to be inspected and if it wasn't covered by warranty it would be a minimum $150 fee. After some stern words, they agreed to have a look and take photos, just not today (yesterday) because they have a new computer system and can't spare the 5 minutes.
Outcome: Not there yet but from the dealers reluctance to even look at the car it doesn't look good.

4WD Trips: Cape York and Fraser Island a couple of times, some local touring nothing extreme just family touring. The car sees mostly dirt road driving due to where we live.

Well heard from the Toyota Dealer today, they have advised Toyota have declined the warranty claim as it is not a manufacturing fault and it was caused by the aftermarket suspension.

The dealer has told me to ring Toyota directly if I want any more information.

So I guess tomorrow its a phone call to Toyota for their official response.

                          • That's their standard response. Even if you show them examples of Prado's with stock suspension and cracks they will not admit they have a problem with their product. The fact that they make a repair kit and that they changed the inner guard design in 2014 clearly shows to me they know they have a problem.
I got them to at least supply the parts kit.

                            • Is this just an issue with the older 150 models, or brand new ones also?
