  • have decided to go down the roof top tent route on top of the trailer. going to work out some sort of system on top so it sits low just above the lid and then make the racks be able to lift up to the required height when at camp. I will mount it to open folding backwards and have the annexe underneath to cover the kitchen area to enclose it all as well.

    • so after having a browse on gumtree yesterday found an arb one for a steal of a price believe it or not in the same suburb as me. that never happens! anyway went for a look and drove home with it. only been used twice, came with the full annexe below.

photos show it sitting on the trailer, fits perfectly behind the panels. the plan now is to make a lifting mechanism and i will have it fold over the back of the trailer so the annexe encloses the kitchen area. Also thinking of adding an awning to the side with a tent room under it so use for the toilet and shower when on longer trips instead of setting up the seperate ensures.

      more tweaking!

Drifta do a camper with a rooftop tent on electric actuators to raise and lower the tent from travel height to setup height, maybe you can approach them re supply

          • Ok so progress with the roof top tent lifting system. have seen some other ideas on my swag and thought of almost everything and have decided to use actuators like the drifta setup. if you go to minute 10 on the below link its what I will be doing

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYozM1Ose9A

I want something that isn't going to rock around when I am up in there with my partner, so sturdiness is important and I think this is going to be the best way to have something easy to lift, and sturdy.

I am going to try and use 2 actuators instead of 4, one either side of the trailer and basically have 4 bits of RHS like drifta, with a spring loaded pin in it. release the pin, lift actuators and the pin will lock into place at full height. Am just trying to work it all out now with heights and the correct actuators required. Am going to try and buy them from the below site. this is who drifta use and if the price is right I would rather buy Aussie made not from eBay and have it break and get stuck in the bush!

            • Trailers looking good mate. I will be interested in seeing what price you can get the actuators for as I am looking at doing the same.

              Cheers,

              Mark

cheers mark bit of a change of plan.

So a bit of brainstorming last night with my best mate over many cold ale's to try and work out this design.

the issue is the sides of the trailer are 550m. the tent needs to raise 500mm and to get an actuator that lifts 500mm the actual body of it is about 800mm long so its too big. also the front of the tent is over the wheel arch so i dont have the full 500 to work with. and I don want the rack to be the whole size of the trailer. so back to the drawing board.

Then the smart son of a bitch shows me this video and says why don't we build this, and have the actuator horizontal at the front and use it to push the scissor lift up. this way we only need a really small actuator and it effectively will lift much higher. Awesome idea and this really gets the brains flowing.

                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eh0kyhEa8g8

Then we come up with potentially buying a motorcycle scissor lift jack and bolting it to the hard lid. we don't have to make it for one. and secondly if we buy something it will be much cheaper. a couple hundred in steel and $300 for a good aussie made actuator. I hunt on eBay and find this.

                http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/141824394...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

So basically I am going to build the four legs, weld them to the sides of the trailer. Have slightly smaller box tubing inside of this. weld a nut on one side and put say an M10 bolt with a plastic handle on the other end to tighten it up. do one of these in each 4 of the corners. so when lifting you undo them, jack the jack up to required 2m height. have another nut welded at that height so tighten knobs and lower jack then open lid.

simple concept and it should work fine. as long as we have the jack perfectly centre with a large base to lift the tent with, it shouldnt bind at all. i will use candle wax on the steel as thats what all the manufacturers do with steel so will take some pics as we progress.

fingers crossed. cant wait to test it. off to fraser for 2 weeks in March.

                • also rigged up a solar regulator into the back of the prado during the week and an anderson for charging via my 100w flexible panel. it fits perfect behind the seats and my fridge so it should be enough to keep the fridge running. will take some pics soon

                  • so the trailer has a 65L dual zone fridge and enough solar to power it never ending basically. but my engel in the car is only kept running by the alternator powering the battery. have been meaning to do some solar for it and with my annual 2 week fraser trip fast approaching I was sprung into action.

decided to go with a flex panel instead of mounting one permanently on the roof. this way it stores neatly behind the fridge in between the cover and seats. when I get to camp I can throw it on the roof, the sand or wherever. Short circuit current of this 100w panel is 6.1amps and the little MPPT reg off eBay works a treat. very happy with it.

mounted the regulator in the pocket of the prado so items stored dont knock it. panel plugs in via the anderson in the back.

                    • Hi prado2004

when your in camp do you have the car connected to the trailer?

I made a ~10m long anderson cable so I can disconnect the trailer from the hitch but still have the batteries in the camper and car linked
that way the solar also charges you vehicle batteries.

Hey Hugo no mate keep it disconnected. the trailer has 270ah worth of batteries and its own 180w worth of solar. car has a 100ah battery and this 100w solar. trailer also runs its own fridge freezer as well as a lot more. this engel is just for drinks and stays in the car. the beauty is though yes I run long cables as well so can add the 100w panel to the existing 180w worth of solar if I need to in the camper and vice versa. the trailer is fully self sufficient and I camp for 2 weeks at a time and the batteries are still full when I leave.

                          • Got the foxwing installed. Didnt like the dodgy brackets it came with so off to bunnings and bought some 5mm steel L Brackets which I have modified and used. Off to fraser on sat for 2 weeks so it will get some use! just need to slide it forward slightly to close the gap above the rear door.
