  • Smithy's Rig Build

Hi All - Thought I would do a rig build to show off the benefit of knowledge I have gained from this forum, and share my pride and joy with you.

Purchased the new addition back in July 2011 (a 2009 120 D4D Manual GXL), with only 32,000km on the clock, and rather pristine. Was stock, with Toyota Sovereign bar and rear window tint, with the factory issue grandcraps on the rims.

The car is the family commuter during the week, with three little monkeys to cart around the traps, and my play thing on the weekends (on the odd occasion I actually have time to play or am allowed to drive it). We are planning on doing a lot of camping with the kids in the coming years, so wanted to fit the car out for that purpose, with some additional off-road capability. Also, when at home, I like to cart a boat around, so the car needs to be self sufficient for camping, with no reliance on a trailer for carting the gear around. This will also give us the ability to explore the big island of Australia in the years to come without being restricted by a camper trailer.

Since we bought the car, the following mod's have been added:
    - Offroad Capability:
    New rubber - BFG 265/65/R17 AT's x 5

Finally found a suitable 100AH battery to fit in the rather small ARB battery box, and wired in additional sockets to the rear for fridge and other accessories.

Ran the cabling all the way though the chasis rail, which was a pain in the..... but happy with the end result. Entered the vehicle in the LHS rear quarter panel, where I found a gromet behind the jack.

Due to space restrictions trying to fit all the camp gear in with the car full of kids, I set about building a cost effective (and easily removable) box to house the fridge, but still allow for the rest of the luggage to be efficiently stored. I picked up some pointers from others on this site, and decided that I would clamp the unit down with "U" bolts to the existing third row seat locking points.

After testing it out over the summer, I couldn't be happier with the overall result, and it only takes 5 minutes to put in or pull out, which I couldn't do with a set of drawers.

For those of you wondering, the light rope and angle is my improvised cargo barrier. As far as I can tell, I can't get a cargo barrier for my car, as I have dual air conditioning, so this will provide some level of safety from unwanted cabin missiles, in the event of stopping too fast when loaded. We only carry soft stuff up top as an added safeguard.

A snap of one of our recent camping trips, with the Blackwolf turbo 240 Plus tent we cart around everywhere. I can't rate this tent highly enough for our purposes. Fast to set up (we now pack it with the fly on) and comfortable for the five of us, plus luggage (I wouldn't go any smaller for 5 people). Compared to the OzTents, which I really like, the packed dimensions are more suitable for carting around, and there is more space for 5 people in this tent.

A couple of shots of a recent trip to St Alban's Bay on Tassie's central north coast with Palmer.

Note the home made sand flag - 2/3 of an old beach rod, and SWMBO knocked up a flag out of an old high visibility vest and some rigid plastic. Not a bad effect! I strapped it to the bull bar with a couple of cam straps, and job done!

I think you have passed your PradoPoint exam! Well done. Good list of mods that will take you pretty much anywhere. I can't believe how much space there is around the compressor! I know the 150 is a bit smaller than the 120 in that location but that is amazing. You can change light bulbs!

After the trip to St Alban's Bay I realised how handy a UHF can be, so off to the communications store for a new radio - GME TX3500 paired with an RFI 921-71-75 6.5DB antenna. This was pretty easy to wire up in the end (given I am an accountant by trade). Haven't given it much of a try yet, but after I got it wired in, I set it to scan and immediately picked up some locals using some of the educational words my kids are going to learn when they next ride in the car with the radio tuned in.

Hi mjrandom, I was thinking I could store the compressor hose and fittings next to the compressor, but not sure how to keep them secure in there (currently they live under the front seat). Not wrong about the space though. Has to be one of the best features of the 120 series - the room under the bonet for mods.

A mate once bolted a small toolbox under the bonnet for these things and some other bits. Just put an R clip through the hasp. Might find a small metal box that works.
