  • Keeping Grande's original suspension

    Hi folks
I own a Prado Grande 3lt diesel, 120 series 2008 model. I recently started to take it off road for some moderate 4wdriving.
So far I have added an ARB bullbar, tow bar, HID driving lights, a GME UHF radio and a winch to the vehicle. I have swapped the Dunlop AT 20 for some proper off road tyres.

I'm not sure what to do with the suspension.

I would like to know whether anyone out there have kept their original suspension and if they have experienced any difficulties when driving off road and corrugations.

    Thanks for your advice.

    Thanks Craig.
Sounds like the suspension on my vehicle will need some modifications.

Yep, definitely need to upgrade the front with all that weight over the front axle.

If I had air suspension eg like your grande, I would change the stock front struts, and coils. Also put some better rear shocks in with a small amount of extra travel, like 20mm, you could trick the rear sensor for about 20mm, that's all you need with the settings you have, especially as it maintains the height with load.
Then drill out and put a split pin or similar to help prevent the bottom of the airbag from lifting & popping out during articulation on offroad tracks.
Carry SST & 2 spare rear airbags on any trip further than 100k from home.
Be practiced at r&r of them so you can easily change one at the side of the road.

I'll second #############'s post. Just don't go out and buy new OEM airbags...I think they're @the $800 mark?? Find some at breakers yard if need for emergency spares. Once originals die go aftermarket airbags....been told they are far far better!! This is all that is missing off mine but still it's brilliant,,just waiting for the airbags to die to justify the spend...

I would stick with the original ones they work well for 7-8 years, they are about $350each, then you have your replacements ready, for when they go, yes when not if........

                  Hello again
I should have mentioned that at times I tow a heavy duty off road camper trailer approx 750 kg. I am thinking of upgrading the front suspension and leave the rear suspension as is.
                  Do you think that'll work?

You can actually change just the front springs but to do that, you have to remove the entire strut assembly. So you might as well change the strut as well. I have gone with Bilstein 5100 series for the front and 5160 for the rear. Bought from the US from Downsouth Motorsport.

I started out with OME 884 for the front first and kept the TEMS shock front and back. Make sure that you have 80-90mm droop for the fronts.

                      Thanks Andrew.
Guess I'll have to get some quotes for the front suspension.
                      Cheers

                            G'day castoy
Do explain with the steps required...... picks would be great also.
So I take it your rear can no longer be raised or lowered.
                            Cheers
