  • Replacement of front Disc Rotors with 4WD Disc Rotors

    Hi all,
I'm looking at upgrading my front disc rotors as I've worn through 3 sets already with offroad driving and towing a camper trailer.
Has anyone upgraded their front rotors, and what do you recommend?
DBA have a slotted rotor and I'm wondering if these are good value (good long term wear and good braking performance with a load)

You'll find he's talking about drilled rather than slotted. Slotted work great in big 4x4s that generate lots of heat such as when towing.

I've always replaced my rotors with slotted and about to fit the DBA T2s after 80,000 klms on the OE rotors & pads.

IMO, there is no reason to spend extra coin on other than standard rotors.
Drilled can crack between the holes.
Slotted is a p.i.t.a to machine properly.
These vehicles should not be generating that much heat they would need that.
However it's bling, if it makes you feel better go for it.
Standard rotors will wear the pads least.

how often do you slow down with the motor first?

            Have you seen this thread?

            http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...includes-pics)

There are a couple of others too.

The standard pad and rotor isn't / wasn't as good as the DBA / Bendix I replaced them with. Slotted rotors are no problem at all and resist warping better than flat rotors. Pad wear is increased but that is marginal. The feel and stopping power is much improved. Going from my 120 to the 150 is a step backwards.

Some OEM slotted rotors are not to be machined (Ford premium rotors and the FPV Brembos) but these can be done. DBA slotted rotors are no problem. My HSV rotors machine easily too you just need to use a normal lathe instead of a brake disc lathe as they are too big.

Reckon the DBA and Bendix worthwhile.

That's the idea of slotted, first touch of the brakes and the rotors are clean and the slots don't fill up with mud. I had slotted on my GQ shorty and it liked mud and I never had the problems you mate is talking about.

Excellent discussion guys, thanks for your input.
I might go with the Bendix 4x4 pad and see how they go
                cheers

Hi there wathools, when ever the original pads wear out I replace them with Bendix pads (around the same $$ anyway) and I don't get any where near the brake dust I get from the standard pads all over the alloys. I havnt replaced them on the 120 yet as they were done before I bought it an so far no issues with the brakes. (you must be just around the corner from my house Glenmore Park)...........Cheers Steve

                    Hi All,

I recently spoke to Pedders in Geelong and they have suggested for me:

Front Rotors - DBA 4x4 T2 (Kangaroo Paw, Curved slots (No Drill)(DBA2700S)
Rear Rotors - DBA 4x4 T2 Kangaroo Paw, curvedslots (No Drill) ((DBA793S)

                    Brake Pads
                    Front - Bendix HD (1482HD)
                    Rear - Bendix HD (1200HD

They did ask about how I use the vehicle and also if I tow anything.
I advised them, of my vehicle setup inc the 250L Fuel tanks I have, and the false floor with Fridge over the back axle. And I do go 4WD several times a year and tow my offroad Camper 1 year on big trips.

Stuart sounds good. The only reason I went with the drilled and slotted discs at the front was that the slotted discs weren't in stock and they sold me the drilled/slotted ones for the same price. I wouldn't have bought the drilled rotors otherwise. Drilled rotors are noiser than slotted rotors. And can have problems with track work unless you rock the car to stop the pads settling in one place with hot discs (can lead to cracking between the holes). And we all do track days with our Prados.

So Kav you getting the slotted ??? I'm debating wether to leave mine as is (which is standard) or replace with slotted and bendix. Just that when doing the GTG next year ill have just over two tonne behind me going down into Talbotville so want best braking available... Cheers Steve

Slotted rotors (and cross drilled discs) allow the gases generated during braking to disperse more easily. In my opinion well worth it. I have (or SWMBO) warped the standard front Prado rotors and so have plenty of others. Never had an issue with the slotted rotors and they did more km in the 120 than the original rotors.
