Same dealer told them not to worry about smoke and rattle. $6 grand later.

Bugger Bali, get out and see Australia before we sell it all to China.

      Yes this is what happens,

Interesting, TOYOTA know how important this work is & it needs to be done URGENTLY!!!!! If not this is the results, over & over.......
One a day lol....... TOYOTA DEALERS REALLY CARE ABOUT YOU & your vehicle DON'T THEY?
A couple of years to get it done? I suggest any vehicles left with copper seats not too many will be still running in 2 years.

Moving forward, $11,000 is cheap for a new Toyota long motor with new Injectors installed!
Then go to small claims, I'd suggest there's no way Toyota will get away with any of this & they would settle & pay before they loose & it costs them more. Don't let them get away with it. Pecidence has been set!!!

NOTE: As the letter says, the seats should be changed at 40k & 80k services. You have this in writing now. Usually Toyota dealers get to do these services especially 40k. They often did not service as per the book, hence the letter, so it's simply caused by whoever did the 40k service.

I hope you have a smile now as many should as they fill out their VCAT or whatever small claims paperwork to get their $$$$$ back.

      All the best!

      Cheers,

      Prado lover

I spent 16 years in a Toyota workshop down here in Melbourne and there is no service requirement to replace injector seats??

There is a requirement to check valve clearances, back then they accepted either an auditory inspection (by listening) or in extreme cases to check with feeler guages but not to replace seats.

Breeze, you mentioned you had the 80,000km service done at this dealer, have they serviced it since in the last 160,000km?

If not, do you have service history for the last 160,000km?

These are the things Toyota will look at when assessing the warranty claim. Coming from a dealership background, when we had product issues like this our hands were tied. I'm sure they could put a warranty request in to Toyota but if they say no the dealership has to deliver the bad news.

This might not be what you wanted to hear but I hope it helps !

        Hi Toyoboy,

Thank you for the further evidence of the belief there is no requirement to change the injector seats.

You should have a read of the customer service exercise, Q5 & A5 where it clearly states, "the injector nozzle seats are non-reusable parts which are scheduled for replacement during the valve clearance inspection at 2 years/ 40,000klms intervals".

This point has been argued for years, but it's written clearly & concisely as I quoted above! It's written in the latest customer service exercise so there's no further to discss there.

Toyota changed to coated seats by around 01/08, they obviously knew there was a problem
From that point, they should have had a technical bulletin informing the dealers to make sure this work is completed as per schedule.
Rather than wait for HUGE numbers of wasted engines, also court cases before they act.
It appears they are more concerned about tarnishing the name TOYOTA than they are preventing HUGE catastrophic engine failures.

It's sad they have not learned much, 4 years to get this urgent work done? Well that should cost them hundreds of thousands or millions (nothing for them I suppose) o well the ones that pop those lucky owners should get a new motor for free, lets hope they are not too remote when their bottom end bearings have melted. It won't be good for the TOYOTA Name which is the sad part.

When I have asked workshops ranging from Kmart/Ultratune to TOYOTA Dealers if they look at the oil pickup, they look at me silly. Common reply "we don't do that, we only use genuine oil"
If I am asked why, I explain it, they just look at me like I'm silly again, lol......
Lets hope with the c.s.e they have smartened up. I wouldn't put money on it though.

Hi Toyoboy, I have the service history for the vehicle and we have a brilliant mechanic who in my opinion has done an exceptional job to get this vehicle to last for over 200,000km if we compare it to how long all the others with the same engine have lasted. I think that if it had been strictly serviced by Toyota it would have gone bang long ago. It is interesting to note that the dealership did not appear to have kept the service history of this vehicle as we were asked to supply a copy of their own paperwork. And yes, they have already tried to blame our brilliant mechanic rather than consider their own service history. Like I said, this car has lasted so much longer than others that appear to have been solely serviced by Toyota. I would much rather receive the personal service from our mechanic who actually cares about our car than the production line system at the dealership. He obviously knows how well he has looked after it as he often requests first option to buy it if we ever want to sell it. You wouldn't offer to buy a vehicle if you weren't confident about its history.

Prado lover, thank you for your assistance and advice. Interesting to note that the first tactic was "deny, deny, deny" that the CSE was remotely linked to the piston failure but when I asked what had caused the failure I was met with a blank look and an I Don't Know. Sorry Toyota, not good enough. If you are going to deny a link, at least have looked at the engine! They claim to have no knowledge of this issue but then showed us a Hilux engine (same engine) that had recently come in with 2 dud pistons. How can they not know, yet show us further proof of this problem???? I'm sure the owner of the Hilux paid up for a new engine without even knowing that it wasn't his fault. I could say so much more right now but I will restrain my fingers until we receive a response from Toyota.

Give me a BJ42 or BJ73 any day. Now they were built tough and so simple to diagnose and fix problems.

I have my own workshop now so I'm not pushing any agenda but before you go "toyota bashing"just remember that it's not just 40,000 and 80,000km services that they should have checked valve clearances (and apparently replaced injector seats) but also at 120,000km, 160,000km and 200,000km. And if these services were done by your mechanic maybe you're angry with the wrong people?

            Just a thought.

Mine was "serviced" by same dealer at all scheduled intervals from 1 to 70 thousand. All good they reassured. Then it went bang at 73K. No, let's not bag Toyota.

Thank you for all the help provided here.

It's been some time since I was assisted here with the 120 series. I've meant to return earlier and provide an update on how things went. Armed with all the valuable information provided here, I went with my father and took on the local Toyota dealership. They did up a quote initially to replace the engine for just over $11,000 and they thought we were coming in the door to hand over the money. We let the service man talk and then I quietly started asking questions. He didn't like that at all and he didn't like it when I held up all my research and told him that here were a number of examples of the engine failure problem that he denied existed. He yelled at me for using Dr Google to try and blame Toyota when they were bending over backwards to help my father. I looked around and I said to him that I was currently keeping my voice down but if he wanted to, all he had to do was push the right button and I would ensure that the whole district heard what I had to say. By that time we had an audience of Toyota employees, most of whom were probably quite puzzled at having a woman talking spare parts at them. The young man we were dealing with didn't want to know us so I pointed out the window at my 80 series and said that the Prado had half the km's on it compared to the 80 series and had failed - not good enough when you consider the regular attention the Prado gets. Despite being adamant that the failure was not caused by the copper seats wearing out, when I asked what had caused the failure he said that he didn't know as they hadn't looked at it. So we went in and pulled an injector out and it was black.

Anyway, when we left we were chased down by one of those who had been listening. He wanted to know more about the engine failures that I had listed in my hand and what had caused them. This employee wanted to run fuel tests and we agreed but said that we wanted to take our own sample at the same time to ensure that we weren't stitched up. Oddly, the fuel sample was never taken. Again we explained the way that the Toyota servicing had missed replacing the copper seats and were able to demonstrate that Toyota had done those vital services when it should have happened. By the time we returned home we received a phone call advising that the engine would be replaced by Toyota. We had to wait 6 weeks but in the end it cost us a total of approx $400 for one extra part that we paid for and that was it. Engine replaced and we have been happy with the performance thus far.

And while we waited for the Prado to return, we bought a BJ73 to run around in. Again, a great little Landcruiser but it certainly needed an extra gear between 3rd & 4th.

Thanks again to all those who were able to provide the details we required to present to Toyota. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Tough fight but a good result. Pity it needs such angst to get the right decisions made.

Probably late & really bad injectors. Probably had one of those small cracks.
                    Then at 268k.......pop.
If it ever happens stick with the new long motor.
