  • Who has had Engine Failure in 120 series

    I would very much like to get a list of owners who have had an engine failure as a result of injector seat failure causing blow-by and hence blocking pickup screen.
    Really only interested in Australia only.

    If you could possibly just list below like i have would be fantastic

    Vehicle-2006 D4D Prado
    Klms when engine failed -130,000
    Reason for failure-Blocked oil pick up screen
    Did Toyota cover under warranty or cover any costs-NO
    Was servicing carried out by Toyota prior to failure-YES

    Also if anyone has any information that proves this is a major problem in Australia if you can PM me it would be greatly appreciated.

      Haha bushbasher I hear ya. it may not be a major problem for them but $17k is a major problem for me. Maybe I can change their mind. Can you PM me the details of your failure as I would love to have evidence of confirmed other failures.

      Thanks again Roo. I have those details already. Just hoping to get actual failed engines in oz.

        Funny how Europe and even NZ use a different motor than OZ.........at least that's what Toyota Aus would like you to believe.

          Cmon guys i know there are lots more out there with these issues.
          Even if you have had injectors replaced under warranty due to issues with the injectors would be great info to help me out.
          As before more than happy for PM's

            If you get some info to consumer affairs they should demand figures from Toyota!

              Hey Benny, I've had all injectors replaced under warranty and then no 1 injector failed from the replacement batch, so had that one replaced again,

              2007 (08 plated)
              Approx 85000k
              Extended warranty covered both times
              Wasnt servicing through them at the time,

                Toyota in Mackay have been pretty good to me, I've had a fair bit of work done under warranty, toyo aust has been the ones dragging their heels, also my buggy hasn't been thrashed thank god for purchasing extended warranty, $1400 well spent, for over 10k worth of work done

                        There are actually quite a few however with PM's being the majority of responses. I guess legal action means most are cautious.
                        I do believe however that without this thread and all the other related threads there would actually be MANY more as lots of people have taken corrective action,which is great and the reason for great forums like this. I just wish i had better access to the forum when i was travelling as the problem started to really covered by posts after i had left home.
                        Anyway i am glad to be able to help other people out from having to deal with this major problem.

                          My 2008 Prado D4D died last week with 126000km on the clock. Diesel mechanics in the town I was towed to all concluded that it had "dropped a piston". What was concerning was the fact that the three different mechanics I saw had all had several D4ds in with the same problem in recent months.. According to one there were problems with piston and injector quality with the most common issue being a leak past the injector O ring that led to carbon getting into the oil and blocking the strainer on the oil pump intake leading to engine failure. The mechanic who did the engine rebuilds said that the injectors were held in with an 8mm bolt and its small size meant you couldn't tighten it enough to prevent future problems especially if tightened to Toyota specifications. He rang a diesel engine rebuilder in another town while I was there and he reported that he had 4 Hiluxes with the same problem in a week!! Toyota asked that I return my vehicle to where it had been serviced and I'm now waiting for a diagnosis and hoping that Toyota will assist in the repairs.

                            126 thou? Mine went bang at 73K and took them 8 weeks to repair with a new short motor. Good luck.

                              Injector failure in my D4D, March 2007 build with 99,980km on the clock. $18,000 repair bill (new long motor & turbo) and took 4 weeks to do.
                              All covered under Toyota genuine extended new car warranty(the best $1800 I have ever spent).
