  • JPH's 150 GXL

Thought I should finally get around to doing a build thread. After several years of wanting to get a Hilux again, I went down to the local Toyota dealership with my two boys to look at twin cabs. I soon realised how little leg room there was and how little room there was in the back seat with two car seats in. The sales go showed me some 120 series Prado's to compare.. Hmmm I'm a tradie, so I need a ute... but hang on I'm keeping my Rodeo and my truck maybe I don't need another ute... What to do... What do we all do in this situation, we ask google, Hilux vs Prado.. What did I find.. Pradopoint. Well after a lot of lurking and taking onboard many threads, I started looking at 120's, then came across the 150. If you ask my wife I was in love again.. with a bloody Prado.
So the search started, I ended up picking up a late November 2009 build 150 Turbo Diesel Auto GXL, Graphite (Silver Metallic according to Toyota) from Ballarat Toyota. The previous owner was an older guy and it was well looked after.

I picked her up in mid Aug 2012 with 78,000 kms on it, very stock standard, it even had the genuine towbar removed and fitted to previous owners new 150. Now for the fun to begin!

Ah such a blank canvas to work with :-) But hang on, your sig says you have an ARB bar, winch, snorkel, etc. Pictures or it didn't happen!

Yours is about the same vintage as mine Josh.

The old man is a self employed mechanic with a workshop filled with great toys, such as hoists, welders etc, best part is it's about 100m from my factory and three minutes from home. So this would be a great place for a rig build, a Very handy place indeed. Dad and I had started stockpiling bits and pieces for the impending arrival. So we hit the ground running with a battery tray from Offroad Downunder (good to support locals when I can), redarc isolator and remote head brake controller, anderson plug for the Jayco and a future offroad camper.. ARB compressor, Waeco fridge power cable and outlet. By the time I got back from picking the Prado up in Ballarat the replacement towbar had arrived at Dad/s ready to fit. So this gave us a bit to get on with for the next few weeks. We noticed a bit of moss and grass growing from behind the spare wheel so the cover came off to clean out the crap, luckilly we checked as the lock from the spare tyre was stuffed and had to be cut off and repaced, easier to do in the workshop than the side of the ride with a flat tyre.

Awesome timing, end of August is the 4wd show, so off to Melbourne with some cash.. ordered a Safari Snorkel, ARB Winch bar, Rhino Pioneer Platform and a new UHF aerial. Cook wasn't too happy with the amount I spent but I got some great deals.....

So when the goodies started to arrive time to play again..

I fitted the Bar myself, I had fitted one to my old Hilux and Rodeo in the past, but let ARB fit the snorkel. When the Pioneer platform arrived one of the cross bar had been poprivoted in the wrong spot, so after speaking to Rhino they confirmend it was wrong, i shifted it and it fiited great. Rhino were really great about it, I did also have to take the end off the rack to empty out the drilled out pop rivot heads and swarf. They sent me down some spare rivots and a hi lift bracket for my troubles.

Fido I've been so busy working on it and working to pay for the toys to do the thread but will keep adding to it!

Micmac very true about emptying the wallet! I was lucky though most things have been purchased at trade rate or show specials, an eBay bargain winch nod most has been fitted ourselves except for the snorkel, could bear taking an 80 mm hole saw to the side of her!

There's always still something else to be done ####, need to sort out the back as we'll, most likely some custom drawers, cargo barrier, fridge slide and maybe a water tank.

That's a lot of mud behind the spare wheel carrier, has it been for a swim?

Thanks Bendman, it's a work in progress... D4D the old guy that had it before me was a real estate agent in Stawell, he spent a fair bit of time on and off farms. It hadn't been off road looking underneath, but had a fair bit of Malley dust through it. I found the easiest way to stop dirt getting trapped between the wheel cover and the door was to remove the cover.. Looks much better IMO.

We picked up a Simoco 100 channel UHF of ebay, so this was next on the hit list, the main body of the radio is larger than the GME UHF's so there wasn't much hope of fitting it up under the dash or centre console. So we velcroed it under the driver seat, at the end of the day if I get water inside the car the UHF is probably the least of my problems.. While fitting the UHF we had a chance to finish off a few other projects, this included fitting off the Redarc remote brake controller. I utilised two blanking plates to the right of the steering wheel.

Although it's not a proportional brake controller I think it's a nice and compact unit and more than adequate for the towing that I do. Nothing worse than banging your knee every time you get in and out of the car on a bulky brake control unit.

The next project was to mount the ARB compressor under the bonnet, I had been watching Wooleys thread but decided I didn't want to wait, glad I didn't as I have had plenty of use from the compressor over the last three months. I decided to mount it in behind the air cleaner and utilise the three threaded studs to mount the bracket on. I made up a quick template in 3mm mdf to ensure it would fit. I then used a piece of 3mm Aluminium plate to replace the mdf. I bolted the compressor mount to this plate with bolts and nylocks, using a 25 mm nut extension I bolted the bracket in to the engine bay. It is extremely tight! Who needs knuckles anyway..

In total it cost me $5 to make the bracket and an hour or two of my time, up until now the ARB switch has been hanging out of a switch blank, I couldn't bear the cabin carnage to the dash so I have just order some switches from Newpro tech for the compressor and the driving lights I won. It'll be great to have it finished off.

I Picked up some Roadsafe front recovery points from the local TJM outlet, they bolted up reasonably easy, a little bit of mucking around. I also managed to find another ebay bargain, a damaged Warn XD 9000 winch. It came off a pranged Hilux that was purchased from the auctions, the guy that bought the lux only wanted the motor, so I bought the winch. It had two broken mounts either side of the drum, but everything else was in good nick and only about 12 months old. I ordered two new drum mounts and then found some time to bolt it in, so for under $600 I got a near new Warn Winch, winner winner! While it was on the hoist for the winch fitting I bolted on Brains TG150 actuator guard, a well deisigned piece of insurance!

Thanks VeeZeess it's a work in progress as the funds allow, pretty much most of it was done between September and mid November, so we did a lot quickly. Now have to keep saving again.
