Fitting a Racor 230 to a 120 D4D 2007 GXL Auto.

A few pics of what I did to fit a Racor second fuel filter to my D4D. Seems to work a treat. Pretty good cheap insurance for any water and dirt problems.




The bracket came from Mitre 10 and the bolt holes matched up on both legs of the bracket with the filter and with the bolt holes in the side of the engine bay. Just had to drill out the holes to take an 8mm bolt. Also removed and reversed the bracket holding the large rubber tube adjacent on the fire wall. Bent the filter attachment leg to suit and that was that. Primed easily and no leaks. Used thread tape but sealant. Just have to remove now to paint the bracket and it's completed.

Nice job, I have a few questions if you have time to answer please.

Did you get the Racor 230 filter from ebay as a previous post on the D4d Maint. thread from Roo suggested as a good place to get it?
What additional hose fittings and associated sizes did you need for this job - I am assuming these do not come with the filter and you need to buy them separately?
How much did this set you back?

Hello Wardos,

Racor 230 filter unit came from TDS Industries in the USA - same place as the Roo suggested.

Racor 230 unit with 10 mic filter was $103, 2 x Racor 10 mic cartridges (R20T) $44.00, Aeroquip Hose 3/8" 5ft $22.70, Fittings 3/8" barb fittings $5.50, - total was $229.20 US = $226.76 AUD

Took about 10 days to arrive. Very good service. The 3/8" bards I got were straight. In the pics you will see one is a 90 degree fitting. I bought that locally but had to get an adaptor to make a BSP fitting (the 90 degree bit) to match the american pipe thread fitting (the filter unit bit), both 1/4" but different thread. The filter unit takes 1/4" NPT ( american pipe thread). The 1/4" plug came with the unit.

The bracket came from Mitre 10. I took the filter housing in with me to check on the bolt holes. The bracket I got lined up perfectly with the filter and with the holes in the side wall of the engine bay (75mm between centres). Drilled out the existing holes to take 8mm bolts, bent the filter attachment leg and job done.

Great post Shifter. You have solved my problem with having the Couplertec monitor on the side wall. Do you have the glass bowl attached? I can't see it from the photo.

Yes mate there is a glass / plastic bowl fitted to the bottom of the filter unit.

Had a heart stopping moment today: This morning fired up the engine as normal, drove away, low power, engine stopped. Blood hard to steer without power steering! Fired up again, ran , engine stopped. Got home, lifted the bonnet and noticed the Toyota filter primer was fully in the down position. Thought no more about, button came back up, fired up the engine and noticed it suck down. Opened the large plastic screw on the Racor unit and found the black ball non-return valve stuck. Popped it out and found it was not spherical but distorted. Removed it and cause of the problem solved. Don't think this application requires a non-rturn valve so it's all good again. Had me worries for a moment or two!

Ahh scary moment! I have been on the Racor website instead of ebay, (http://www.tdswarehouse.com/products/79-Racor-Products/) and thought I see if I could buy the kit including hose and fittings. It is unclear as to whether you get the whole kit with the 230r10 unit. Were you able to obtain the whole kit including fittings and hose from them?

I actually filled the filter unit via the bleed screw with clean diesel using a small funnel after fitting it to the bracket, until it was full, replaced the screwed plug and then primed with the Toyota priming pump button. Fired up first go. The blue hose I got is Areoquip FC332-06 rated at 21 bar or 300 psi, very substantial and more than suitable/adequate.

Hi all - I have been offline with no power, water, telephone, mobile etc since Saturday thanks to ex cyclone Oswald but I have just manage to order the kit from the supplier in the US and they are sending the 90degree fitting in lieu of a straight fitting. Total package the same cost as Shifter's previous post US$229.20 incl postage.
