  • I checked the bulbs and ballasts after a couple of days of High Country fun and they haven't moved. Need to check them again as we did a bunch of river crossings on our trip. The only problem I had with any of the gear installed pre-trip was the fridge slide coming adrift as it was screwed in rather than bolted. Have been told tube bolts are the way to go, now just need to find somewhere that sells them.

    • What do you mean by tube bolts? Can you put a cabinet screw in nut in the board?

            • Still hunting for T Nuts in metric sizing, hardware stores around here only have imperial. I'm going to try a specialist bolt place next, there's one not too far away.

The fridge slide worked well otherwise :-

              • Another new addition to the Kaka based on our GTG experience, a Rhino Pioneer SXB Platform rack (44102B).

Have to get a proper measurement but it's looking like it might not make the 2.0m limit at the local shopping centre. I went for the SXB option so I can easily swap between it and the cross rails if needed. As you can see from the pics the awning has gone straight on but I can only use 1 bolt per bracket to fix it to the platform now due to the plank spacing (could use 2 on the Sportz bars). It doesn't look like it's going to move though, have given it a bit of a push and shove test and couldn't budge it. Have yet to re-fit the TraxRax as one of the mounting bolts gets close to the mounting bolt securing the Pioneer Platform to the crossbars. I'm sure it won't take long to sort out, just need to find some fiddle time LOL.

                • Went down to #############'s magnificent workshop today and had my brakes replaced. Toyota said the brakes needed doing "urgently" at the last service (just last week) but I wanted a 2nd opinion. After putting the car up on the hoist and removing all the wheels it was found that the fronts had around 3mm left and the rears were down to around 1mm with the wear indicators touching the disc (so that's where all the squealing was coming from!).

The new vs the old :-

                  • The front disc all freshly machined :-

                    New front pads installed :-

I'm surprised Toyota let the rears get so low before saying anything, they can't have worn so much in 6 months surely? No wonder we had so much fun on some of the steeper descents at the GTG.

For a bit over half what Toyota wanted after factoring in the PradoPoint 10% discount (thanks ####) and a much better job I'm very happy indeed!

                    • I decided to relocate the UHF yesterday to the panel under the glovebox, makes for easier access and clearer audio. Previously it was stuffed in the little cave behind all the a/c ducting on top of the transmission tunnel.

Panel removed and sound matting trimmed to make room for module, matting can be unclipped to make cutting it easier.

UHF module mounted to panel with double-sided tape.

UHF antenna cable tidied up and secured. An "S" pattern layout for the excess cable would have been better but space was a bit tight. The power lead you can see in the pic was bundled up and tucked into the firewall above all those wiring looms you can see in the pic.

Mic connection lead run up behind and underneath centre console, just need to find a way to secure it ("permanent" double sided tape won't hold as console surface is too textured). Have some outdoor stuff to try that's supposed to work on non-smooth surfaces like brick and tile, should work on textured plastic.

This is the one failing of the Uniden UH7760NB, my old Icom had a screw mounting point for the mic connector (you can see the small hole on the side of the console where it used to sit).

                      • Mounted the mic connector lead onto the side of the console using Scotch Permanent OUTDOOR Mounting Tape (the stuff with the red backing) on the weekend.

This one is made for use on textured surfaces and seems to be holding, time will tell!

Still searching for metric sized Tee Nuts for the fridge slide, even the specialist bolt place only had imperial sizes.

                          • Thanks Troy, will chase up the Tee Nuts with them. We just had the fridge slide screwed down for the GTG and it came adrift on the way to Wonagatta, think it was the Sarah Spur conservation mound roller coaster that did it. You mention barrel length which raises a good point. My ply is 15mm thick with a layer of marine carpet on top so which length barrel should I be going for? The holes in the slide are either M6 or M8 friendly.

For me, i think I'll go Drifta and remove the rear seats. Their kit is I think about $1,300 but includes drawers and a pull out table with legs. Maybe that table is extra.

But as well, I think with your rise, plus leaving the seats in, the fridge is too high.

IMO you'd be better off spending $400 more and getting one of those drop down fridge gizmos. That way you can access the fridge with the grass under your feet.

Love your thread and everything you've done.

The problem with those drop down slides is that they take up a lot of room in the back. They are a lot wider than the equivalent straight slide thanks to the extra mechanism that makes up the "drop" part. We may get some draws in the future and then have to re-assess the fridge slide situation but for now the plastic step works.

Thanks for the compliment. Haven't done any mods recently apart from re-decorating the bash plates some more.
