  • XTM Recovery Gear

Has anyone used any of the "XTM" branded recovery gear? Ray's Outdoors have their 4WD Recovery Kit on special for $199, wondering how it compares to the TJM kit at $279.56 (for VIP members, otherwise it's $299).

    XTM - http://www.raysoutdoors.com.au/onlin...02#Description

    TJM - http://www.raysoutdoors.com.au/onlin...02#Description

The main difference I can see is the TJM kit includes a recovery blanket which can't be worth an extra $100 surely?

Was looking at this a coupla days ago and wondering "why the price difference between XTM and TJM"? The TJM straps appear to be that little bit better. Sure straps from both brands meet/exceed the relevant standards and ratings. But as an example, for the same load ratings, the TJM straps are about 20-25% narrower than the XTM straps. If you've got a bunch of different straps, that space adds up.

One thing that grabbed my attention was that the XTM equaliser strap was only rated to 5,000KG, whereas the TJM equaliser strap was rated to 9,000KG...

Yes. I bought the XTM brand from Ray's before my trip to the High Country. Only used it in anger once but could'nt fault it. I thought it was good value at full price. At $199 it's great value. IMO

The XTM strap in the kit I linked is listed as 6,000kg; the TJM kit doesn't include one but I note they do have one listed separately and it is 8,000kg rated.

Good to hear from someone who's actually used it. Considering the snatch only kit from XTM is $129 than the full kit at $199 is killer value.

Also would one of these fit a Toyota factory bar?

              http://www.raysoutdoors.com.au/onlin...02#Description

I've read it's not a good idea to use these but I thought my factory bar was attached to the chassis.

I was going to suggest Tigerz11 for their recovery kit but the kits aren't listed on their website anymore

They will fit and a lot of people use them. The reason some don't (including me) is that the factory bar is cast and there is a concern (particularly if not pulling straight) that it could break. In my opinion you are much better fitting rear recovery points like I have and AJ120 has and use a bridle - that way you are sharing the load on the chassis - the factory rear bar is only connected to the chassis on the cross bar. If you fit a Hayman Reece rear bar, that is connected to the chassis both sides which is obviously better. Another point is that rear recovery points should cost you less than the hitch receiver type.

Thanks for the suggestion AMTS, some of their other gear may come my way. Their hitch receiver & shackle kit seems really cheap.

I've ordered the XTM Recovery Kit from Ray's, will report back once I receive it.

There is also the argument that you can simply push the recovery strap into the hitch and just use the pin - that's what they taught when I did a 4WD course. This has been extensively debated before. Personally I wouldn't do it - not that I can now anyway as I don't have a towbar

OK, I thought the bar mounted to the chassis rails so thanks for the explanation. The only rear recovery points I've found were some Aus4WD ones on Ebay at $195 but they include an equaliser strap which I won't need thanks to the XTM kit.

If you look at mine or AJ120s build threads you can see what we did. AJ120 uses recovery hooks that should cost you less then $20 each - the passenger side is easy as it just bolts on where the tie down point is currently located. You will need a small metal plate for the driver's side to avoid the exhaust. I got a mate to weld some up for me as I wanted to use shackles.

The factory bar on the 150 attaches at 3 points. So a tow hitch shackle recovery point is pretty good in that situation.

I use rays xtm 8t snatch strap.
It works. It cost $50 on special.
                              Why pay more?
I have a kit from SUPERCHEAP as a spare, it has a 10t strap, 2 shackles, folding shovel, tyre gauge, gloves, in a case/dampner it cost $50.
