  • Five days on Fraser Island

After being washed out in our visit to Fraser in January we always planned to go back. The last week in November promised fine weather and avoidance of the school holidays influx.
An easy run up the Bruce Highway, coffee at Gympie, lunch at Rainbow Beach, airing down to 20psi and across the rather soft sand to the barge at Inskip Point.

    Day 1
The Manta Ray provides a quick trip from Inskip Point.

Low tide allowed for an easy run around Hook Point and on to the eastern beach.

The beach north of Eurong was busy with tourist buses.

We passed Poyungan Rocks taking a glimpse at the house we stayed at last January when it rained and rained for our entire stay. The weather was good to us this time.

    Day 1 cont.

I was pleased with how the Prado handled a full load, it cruised very well on the beach and took the bypass tracks around Poyungan Rocks and Yidney Rocks in its stride.
Finally arrived at Happy Valley, picked up the key for our house from the shop and settled in.

It wasn't long before we were down to the beach for some relaxation.

One of the locals dropped by for a quick look.

The visit by the dingo was a great end to a very enjoyable first day. Little did we realise that tomorrow would lead us to a possible appearance on television.

      Day 2:
We decided to explore some of the inland tracks and followed the Northern Forests Tourist Drive which winds its way from Happy Valley north-west past Black Lagoon, skirts Boomerang Lakes and then swings around to the south-east past Lake Alom, the Knifeblade Lookout and back on to the beach near the Pinnacles.

For most of the two and half hour drive we had the track to ourselves.

We had plenty of time to stop and listen to the sounds of the forest.

Back on the beach we headed for the wreck of the Maheno.

          Day 2 cont:

Our next stop was Eli Creek where my daughter Catherine and her friend Amelia were keen to have a swim. There is nothing better than a quick walk along the boardwalk and then drifting down the creek through the forest to the beach.

After the girls had had their turns Chris and I gave it a go. It's a lot of fun. After our second go we emerged on to the beach to find the two girls who had been resting were now into some beach volleyball just near the crew from Ch 7's Creek to Coast who had arrived to film a segment on beach driving. They spotted one of the group was wearing a Coopers Tire shirt and quickly let him know that the Prado was shod with his product. Next thing our group was being filmed and I was interviewed about my Coopers. Dean Mellor and his crew were really nice down to earth people and made the whole experience a lot of fun. If our part makes the cut it should be broadcast in late December or early January.

Then came the rush hour as the tourist buses started to arrive and the creek became much too busy for a quiet swim.
A couple of planes then landed as part of an aerial guided tour.

            Day 3
We decided to head north along seventy-five mile beach up to Indian Head. Passing Eli Creek and the Maheno we stopped at the Pinnacles to look at the coloured sand formations.

The tide was only half out so the full width of the beach wasn't available but a slower drive allowed us to take in the wonderful scenery. There were lots of people camping and fishing.
A climb up to the top of Indian Head gave us amazing views up and down the beach.

            Looking south.

            Looking north to Waddy Point.

              Day 3 cont:

There was plenty of action in the water. Fish, sharks and turtles. You can see a ball of bait fish in this picture. They were being hammered by sharks.

I was keen to go on the bypass track behind Indian Head so the girls could have a swim in the calm water there. The sand on the track was very soft and deep and I saw a few vehicles attempt it but get bogged. Its about 500m so I walked it first. I came across four Swedish guys who had their very old and tired rental Disco well and truly bogged. They had their tyres at 24 so after deflating them to 18 and with a bit of a push they were out.
I decided to give it a go and the Prado effortlessly went through. I was chuffed. After lunch and a swim we easily went through again and headed back down.
We came across a tour bus which had a problem. Apparently it had a flat tyre and the driver was changing it with the help of one of the passengers. It was still on the jack when one of the passengers decided to jump back on board which caused the bus to tip off the jack and injure both the driver and his passenger. Not a nice sight and a reminder of how dangerous things can be with vehicles on the beach. The ambulance arrived so we headed off. Another stop at Eli Creek for afternoon tea and a swim ended what had been a great day. As we were relaxing two vehicles decided to leave the creek by driving through the swimming area. Such stupidity gives the 4WD community a bad name and ends up with more places being locked up.
              Relaxing at Eli Creek

I'm heading there for 5 nights next Saturday morning. After reading your report and seeing the pictures I think I will be struggling to make it to Saturday.

                Brilliant pictures. Thanks.

Thanks Muz it will be worth waiting for.
                  Day 4:

After waiting for the tide to drop we headed south to Eurong and then on to Lake McKenzie and Central Station.
As we were heading on to the beach at Happy Valley we spotted this dingo having a cooling rest in the creek.

The beach run was a combination of hard and soft sand which meant a bit of back and forth to find the best path. I was hoping that we wouldn't meet too many tourist buses on the track in and fortunately we only came across one just where there was room on the track to pull off.
Lake McKenzie was busy but we were able to find a sheltered spot to have a swim and relax.

                    Day 4 cont:

There has been an improvement in the facilities since I was last there, I especially liked the enclosed picnic area where you can have lunch without any visits from the local dingos. During lunch the numerous tourist buses that were in the carpark headed off leaving us in peace and quiet.
                    Next stop was Central Station.

The creek running through it is crystal clear.

The track runs through some spectacular forest.

                      Day 4 cont:
Lack of recent rain and the large amount of traffic have left the track in and out of Lake McKenzie very soft and deep. Once again I was so pleased with how the Prado handled it so effortlessly.

Back to Eurong and a visit to the bakery completed another great day.

                      Day 5:
I was determined to make the most of the last day. I enjoyed a Fraser sunrise while the others slept.

Farewell to our Fraser home, it sure was a happy place for us.

                        Day 5 cont:
The tide was still going out as we made our way southwards down the beach but slow and steady did the trick. Closer to Eurong the beach was wide enough for a plane landing.

When the tide is higher you are forced to do water crossings a little higher up the beach

With low tide still 3 hours away I wasn't keen to do the inland track so we decided to spend a while at Eurong. The pool and bakery made the decision easier. The girls didn't mind!

How big has the sink hole at Inskip next to the track to the barge got?

Last time I was up there it was supposed to be undermining the road.
