  • Bogged underwater - insurance claim ????

    Hi Guys

What happens if a Prado (or any other car) gets bogged on the beach and goes under several high tides? Eventually gets rescued but starts to malfunction/ not drive properly and is saltwater wet from half way down.

Anyone had experience with insurance claims as to what they usually do in this situation? Is it a write off or do they just 'fix' it up.

    Thanks

Hmm Curious to know how insurance works in Australia,
If it were in USA, it's totalled
in Mongolia, nobody give a shit and you fix it yourself
in China, one less car on the road...

I don't have real world experience... but I would have thought any vehicle in that situation would be a right off.

Many years ago when I was a kid and my old man ran a crash repair shop I recall a Landcruiser (probably a 60 series I reckon) that went under with the tide. It was almost new at the time and we took it to a local freshwater dam, put it underwater and left it for a few days to wash the salt out, it was then repaired under insurance.

In this day and age with the complexity of the modern motor car I would suggest it would be a write off. There are a few examples on PP of guys getting bogged in Nolans Brook, which is freshwater and almost new 150's being written off.

        Cheers Andrew

Accidental saltwater inundation is generally cause for a statutary write off.........I would want it written off.

I would think you should be covered by the standard comprehensive insurance on the basis that you are legally allowed to be there ie had all the right beach permits and the beach wasn't closed by rangers or police etc. It would be considered a write off

Now compare this against the Patrol owner who this season drove past the road closed sign at Cape Melville and got bogged on the beach including high tide damage etc. Not only is he not insured because of his actions but he is also requried to barge the vehicle off the beach at his cost and all environmental damagae/repair costs associated.

It might also depend on the insurance company your with. I have heard some insurance company's have it in fine print your only covered on the beach above the high tide mark.

A Prado is a car, not a boat, so don't put yourself in that situation.

Unless you have spent a lot of time on the beaches, sandbars, etc, you will think that all sand is reasonably hard packed, which it is not. Some beaches are like quicksand and you cannot tell until you walk/drive over it.

Saltwater inundation makes it a statutory write off. No question. Will your insurance company pay out? Thats another question!

X2 paulyc. Friend who used to be in the insurance brokerage industry said most insurance companies don't insure below high tide mark.

How do they work that out when high tide changes every day?

Basically if it's above the high tide mark, then it won't get inundated by the sea!
The sea can't get higher than it's high tide can it.
And yes I know it changes, but then it's still the high tide mark, where ever that mark may be.

Id be interested to see any first hand examples of this - I'm yet to see a motor insurance policy with reference to tides in any way.
                          Cheers

Some insurance companies (eg. NRMA) will cover you on any named road or formed road, but making your own tracks through bush or on sand WILL NOT be covered.
