  • Easy Cool 90L Fridge/Freezer

    Hi All,
I am looking at a fridge/freezer too and stumbled across this one.
Any advice or insider knowledge appreciated.

There's a lot of these available with different branding but essentially the same unit. Some difference in brand of compressor used.
Don't be fooled by the $2299 price. Thats bullshit. That seller is quite free with his claims. I'd suggest you look at other sellers of the same unit.

Anyway, I have one bought in Sydney. Cost me around $430 but with one large lid. Same as this but different seller - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/12v-Porta...item3f1f44bfd0

Its been on a couple of very rough weekend trips which have shaken the shit out of it. Only problems I've had are the plug falling out of the fridge and an intermittent wire to the on/off switch. Both easy fixes and not worth sending back for.
There's als no real tie down points and I don't think its handles would do that job as they look like clothes peg plastic that might break down with UV light.
When the warranty expires I'll attach some tie downs and add some more insulation to it but I'm happy with the unit, froze and cooled nicely although there's no way it'll ever get to the claimedminus 18.
We are happy with it and have no hesitation in recommending them.
If it craps out (12 month warranty), its still cheaper to toss it and buy another than buy a Waeco etc.

You may not think so if it sh1ts itself at the start of a camping trip and spoils all your food.

        I have a 30L Evakool Travelmate, cost $514 from Australian Direct.....its a cheap fridge/freezer back by Evakool's reputable warranty (2yrs).

Been on plenty of weekends and recently rode a trip to Fraser Island and return running at -01 for 3.5weeks solid...never once let me down.....still running strong

Statistically Waecos, Engels etc outlast the ebay cheapies. Entirely up to you to chance it when away camping. Sure I’ve gone with ebay with cameras, tools etc but their malfunctioning doesn’t affect anything else like a stuffed fridge will when remote. What value do you put on an ebay warranty anyway.
            [SIZE=1]Cheers Jim.

What statistics? I'd love to see your factual analysis of Ebay cheapies.
Well of course its up to me and I bought a potentially disposable unit that is still going strong.
Seems like your beaf is more with Ebay anyway.

I think this why the original post started. It wasn't to gauge opinions as to brand name perceptions, it was ask for real user feedback on a particular device.

Malcolm, I've no beef with anyone, just been on this site for 3 and a half years and kept up to date with other people's experience with fridges as I was in the market too. If your's outlasts the Engels at a cheaper price then good on you. You will have increased the statistics on PP for the cheaper ones. I got a cheaper one too and it let me down once on the tracks so hence my two bob's worth.

                Cheers, Jim.

I agree with MalcomM. I'm not sure the statistics exist (let alone whether they're reliable enough) to make the sort of claim that you have Ozpat. A lot of this is hearsay.

Back to the original question, I recently spoke with a guy who had 2 of the 80L ebay fridges. He'd been using them for over a year (touring around oz) with no problems. I've also heard of people reporting problems with them, just the same as for Engel etc (one guy I know refuses to buy Engel as he has experience problems with 3 different engel fridges).

Has anyone done a comparison of the current draw between these different makes.

This should be a deciding factor as well.

                      Here's a some stats.

I personally know three people with Waeco's, one had many issues and to this day doesn't run on 12v, 2 have never had a problem.

                      33% failure rate!

Luckily I'm one of the two without problems.

The original post and the link is for a $579 fridge that is apparantly worth $2299. Straight away you can work out you are dealing with a company that stretches the truth a bit........... is full of S*%T to be more accurate, that should be your first clue.

Like all this made in China, sell it cheap on ebay gear available; you may get a good deal, it may work well for a while. Even the best of brands of fridges have problems, but they have backup, warranty and parts availability. Will you get any of that with an Ebay fridge? especially if it packs up a long way from home, which lets face it, you use the fridge when you travel so if it packs up, it happening away from home is highly likely.

I have 2 fridges, both high end top dollar jobs, an Autofridge (never missed a beat in 8 years) and an ARB fridge. The ARB fridge had an issue early on and was replaced with a new fridge, no questions asked.

The features of the fridge need to be taken into account as well. The Auto fridge can and I have used it for many years without the need for dual batteries, the ARB fridge is packed with features, low voltage shut off, set and forget temperature control, drain for cleaning, dairy compartment, removable lid.

Anyway there is always more to these things than price and whether they last for a year or 2.

                        Cheers Andrew

Hornet, like Racer I bought an Evakool but the 45L version for $579. I can't say enough good things about it. Have a look at Home of 12 Volt www.homeof12volt.com at their range of fridge/freezers. They offer free delivery and their customer service (at their Pooraka store anyway) has been nothing short of excellent.
