  • The Springs 4X4 Park, with the FJ Forum crew

A couple of Prado owners were invited to join the FJCC forum guys on a trip to the Springs 4X4 park over the weekend. (17 & 18 Nov, also the storm weekend).

Managed to convince the family to join me as well so we decided to make it a two night stay and headed out of Brisbane after finishing work early on Friday.

Arriving at the park just after 5:30pm we found Stewy and Renee in their FJ just finishing setting up their own camp.
Now, here's the first lesson learned this weekend.
DON'T LET THE FJ GUYS CHOOSE THE CAMPSITE
Reason = They chose the dusty, sloping, lots of dead wood in the trees with only a Port-a-loo that hasn't been cleaned in 6 months campsite rather than the...
Grassed, flat close to the amenities block campsite

    Friday arrivals:
Stewy and Renee, Snaga and family then Richo later in the evening.
Saturday morning... LFaR (Matt and Colleen)

Stewy can list the FJ guys if he wants.

Oh, and there were a few FJ's around too... but they ran away when they heard the storm might hit Saturday evening.... BIG GIRLS!!

For me there wasn't too much 4 wheeling as I was just after a weekend away with the family but on Saturday morning the FJ crew the Prado's, 60 series and Landcruisers went out and tackled some tracks in the rain.
I lasted about 45 mins before a voice from the back seat was bored, poor Lorelai couldn't get out as it was raing heavily and very slippery and I couldn't venture far from the car to take pics so hopfully someone will be able to add some pics (maybe Renee?)

The rain was light for most of the weekend with an occasional heavy bit but for the most part we missed all the excitement that the guys at CityView have reported.
Watched the radar most of the weekend and there must be a range that affects the weather out there as it was pretty bad just north AND south of us.

Saturday arvo the firewood run turned into another quick play on the tracks... Richo poked his head up a gully run which was slightly technical to start with (ie wheel placement) but soon turned into super soft dirt and loose rocks which quickly halted his forward travel.
Any chance to get his pink rope out really.

Another run Saturday arvo so I jumped into Richo's 150 as navvie and followed the 76 series and 60 series up a creek bed, well... we thought it was the right creek bed but was a different one. Did a small amount of GoPro footage coming back down that creek bed so will put that up when it processed.
Soon after that we're peering down a pretty gnarly track which Richo quickly mentions "I wont be going down there". After checking the lines the 76 series has a go... and as mentioned in that video footage... "It wasn't pretty".

Emerging with only a few dents to the rear bar and undercarriage we continued back out to the main campsite where 'Beer'O'Clock Hill' had been opened up by the park owner.
For the next half an hour or so we watched the FJ crew attempt it but they all got to the same spot with nobody making it to the top that day.

Saturday arvo... also saw my wife putting her Doctor's hat on for two patients.
Lorelai got a bit excited while running and tripped and cut her hand then LFaR returns from a mountain bike ride with half his elbow covered in gravel rash and a couple of small punctures needing to be flushed out.
The rain fell intermittently for most of the night so for the Snaga clan it was an early night to bed.
oh, and if the other campers are wondering what the screams coming from our CT were that night...
Lorelai got bitten by one of these just before she went to bed. Judging by the mark it got her with it's stinger not the nippers at the front.

We awoke to clear skys for the most part on Sunday morning and packed down with a damp trailer but thankfully not in the rain. We departed for another engagement at 9am but the others headed out for another play and I hear there were some tricky recoveries and great 4WD'ing so BRING ON THE PICS guys.
    Cheers, Leon

Stewy will have the full info tonight but the general opinion was (the owner is a mechanic) it is the rear diff.

The FJ owner (Woody) managed to drive back to Brizzy and found that he'd snapped a rear axle, driver side I think, right at the spline. He's already got a new one in the pipeline to the value of around $500 which he's doing himself.
I really enjoyed the Springs (as a 4wd Park) as it's got a lot of good technical stuff and not just mud and hills. That said, Beer O'Clock click is pretty steep and the holes up there were too deep to climb out without maybe the help of a front locker.
Enjoyed the weekend and the company - even for anly a night ;o)
FJ Cruiser - you know you want one......

Judging by the pic stewy sent me of the axle it was a very clean break!
