Congrats on the Shorty.
I bought my Shorty just after they were released in 2009 and have done several trips up the middle through Flinders Ranges, Oodnadatta track, Dalhousie, Mt Dare (worst corregations ever), Kings Canyou, Larapinta loop, Katherine, Litchfield, Kakadu, Darwin, etc etc etc.
I tow a small, hard floor camper trailer and only travel in daylight so no bulbar.
I am still running on standard tyres and have added a dual battery, Polyairs in the back springs and a UHF CB.
So mainly stock and it will take you all over Australia so long as the journey is the focus. If you want to be able to go up or down every track you see then other mods will be required but IMHO you need to set your limits of where you want to go.
I don't need to challenge myself to go to more or most extreme locations. If the risk looks to high for the equipment I have I turn around and find another way and sometimes we just find a higher spot and wait for the water to go down or the mud to dry out or whatever.
It doesn't matter how much stuff you have or how well equipped you are you always have to make that decision.
I can only recommend you join a club interested in the things you are interested in and do their training course and find out what you and your vehicle are capable of and go on trips with them.
And always remember that the SX is lighter and has more rampover than the 5 doors and that makes a big difference.
Remember that the SX has a smaller fuel tank than the 5 door but with a little planning I have had no trouble getting to the next fuel stop and yes I sometimes pay a premium to keep it topped up.
