  • How to change brake discs

Read lots of very useful info in changing the pads, but how do I change the brake discs?

My car has approx 145,000 KM on the clock and I believe it is time she gets new discs and pads. I have already changed the front pads once, given that there is no vibration at all though, would you folks recommend a change of the discs, at least the fronts?

The rear pads are still original and I am fairly certain they are about to go as I have been hearing a slight squeel when applying the brakes, which means it is almost time.

    Cheers.

Thanks prh, I read those instructions and used them to replace my front pads a few years earlier. I just need to understand how do I take out the front and rear discs in order for me to replace them, not sure how the discs are attached to the hubs without taking off the wheel.

Once you take the wheel off and remove the caliper out of the way the discs simply slide off. They may take a bit of persuading with a soft mallet if they haven't been off for a while. I did both front and rear on mine with no issues - didn't even have to remove the brake lines as there is enough free play in the lines to move the calipers out of the way once the bolts are removed. The rears were slightly harder to remove due to the hand brake drum brakes.

He wants to know how to remove the disc rotors, not just the pads. So do I for that matter

The discs are seperate to the hubs, remove the caliper and the disc comes off, all be it you might need some persuasion.

            Cheers Andrew

              That's what I explained - I didn't mention the pads.

Thanks Trekrider, on some cars, the discs are held on by some screws, glad this is not the case with the Prado, should be a straight forward change, at least for the fronts. Not sure if the rears are going to be a problem with that hand brake shoe thingie.

As long as the hand brake is off it's just a case of 'wiggling' the disc to get it to slide off. If you have a problem with the hand brake shoes being too tight you can always back it off with the adjuster.

Cheers, appreciate the prompt feedback. Now to get those wheels off and see how much brake pad I have left

For the rears make sure you back off the handbrake shoes don't just rely on the handbrake being off. I had mine done by others and the handbrake shoes caught and stretched one of the springs which meant I was up for another $200 in parts too many k later. You have to remove the calipers and if you have ABS be careful that you don't damage the cable to the sensors. If that link is the one I think I mentioned holding the calipers up with some wire.

How much time is required to do the front discs and pads? I need to make sure I have allowed enough time to complete the job.

Allow a couple of hours, maybe 3. Can't really remember but it wasn't long. Loosen wheel nuts, jack up (trolley jack), stand under chassis. Repeat. Wheels off. Pretty sure I gave the wheels a good clean. Calipers off and tied up. Discs off. New discs out of box and cleaned with isopropyl alcohol. Calipers back on. Pads out, pads in. Wheels on. Jack up, stands out and back on the ground. Tighten wheel nuts.

Sorry Trek, misunderstood your post. I didn't think it was that easy! Thanks

                              Thanks Andrew,
I was under the impression that the hubs had to be removed.
