I rang Toyota today about the camera. They reckon their was never an OEM camera for an 04 grande... Mind you he also reckons the head unit doesn't have the inputs for a camera, which it does because I've seen them.

So what part number is it from Toyota? He also reckons that the hilux camera is $350!!

In 2004 a reversing camera wasn't a factory option because there is no preinstalled wiring for it. I think it may have been late in 2006 when it became a factory option.

Wow... My beaut little forward facing cam cost me $37 and it's awesome!!
It's already well and truly paid for itself when we were out 4wding on the weekend and having a bit of a play in a small quarry and headed up over a short steep hill with a severe ramp over and whilst all I could see blue sky as I went over, in clear view of the cam was a massive sawn off tree halfway across the track. Had I not of seen this, or one of the other lads have gone over first, serious damage could have occurred.
$37 well spent I'd say.... Why couldn't you use an aftermarket cam at the rear?
They're so small you hardly notice them and there's a number of places you can put them...

An aftermarket camera is my preference, but they don't just plug in.

I can buy a plug on eBay which will allow an after market camera to plug in like it should and I can power the camera off the reverse signal BUT the trigger wire out of the head unit is non existent and comes in the form of a 4 pin plug with only one pin used.. This single wire is where all the problems lie!

Just browsing to see if its easy to find a reverse wire to connect to.
F.y.i, I purchased from eBay, W602C, Toyota, cd, DVD, radio, Bluetooth, iPod/phone plug, full multimedia including GPS, remote and color reverse camera for $242.00. 2 years warranty, send to melb, for any warranty not china.
Easy to fit right in, works well.

Anyway, I quickly fitted it last week, now I want to fit he camera, question is..... Is there a reverse wire close to the back of the unit in case for these o.e cams? Or where do I find it? Easier to ask here before I go out n 35degrees, and where would you take the 12 volts at the rear from? Towbar loom?

After a very thorough search when fitting mine the only spot I could find was at the tailgate, running off the existing reversing lights. Just inside the tailgate looked to be the power for the reversing lights running under the car with other wiring. It's definitely not in the drivers side kick panel or running down the drivers side floor with the other wiring.
Easiest way was to run new wire from the head unit to the tail gate.

Thanks for the reply, I fitted it the other day, found access to a reverse wire, large, red with black trace, behind passenger kick trim, at the lowest plug. I used the reverse signal at the back to power the cam. Rather than put it in the door I fitted it above the tow hitch.
It's central, perfect to back over the trailers, it was very easy.

Very happy with my unit with the works for $240 delivered and 2 yr warranty....... eBay W602C

Just a few quick questions: Where does the GPS antena go? How/what is the procedure for map and POI updates? Does the whole unit go into the 120 easily? Neil

Just fitted two of these W602C units one in wifeys 2002 Corolla and one in the Prado.Must say am very impressed. Unfortunately for us with early Prados if you want the camera to work as per the book you have to run a wire from the reversing lights back to the head unit or as some have done via a switch on the dash. I bought a camera off fleabay that replaced one of the number plate lights and is angled back towards the centre of the car. Works well for most things but is a bit too light in the picture. As far as the GPS antenna goes its a magnet base so will stick to the underside of your roof under the headlining. I found it worked a treat with the corolla but the prado had drop out issues. Ended up putting it on the dash in the front corner on the passengers side. Now works a treat. Map updates I cant help with atm but am going to see what works and will let u know when I do. Supposedly works with most but who knows. All in all very happy with the unit and the sound quality is pretty damn good.

404 i used to have a Chinese gps unit that used IGO8 the same as these units.

You can get map updates for the IGO8 software from this site http://www.austech.info/gps/

it uses (whereis maps) maps usually gets updated once or twice a year, which includes maps,POI, school zones, speed cams.

Looks like latest map file is 19.3 (nov 2012)

easy to update- download , copy and overwrite the folders on your micro sd card

                          enjoy.

Question for Craigm. Where did you get your $37 camera from? Ebay presumably? Am looking at a forward camera but previous purchases from Ebay have been "soso". Good to find someone happy with their purchase.
