    I feel your pain krypto,
my wheel is horrible too. It was only a few cracks at the top when I bought it but after last summers heat and being unprotected by a steering wheel cover (which I cant stand) it now has started to peel in places and broken a couple of stitches at the top right where my hand usually is.
Unfortunately for me mine is not a warranty issue but age and use associated, toyota do seem to be building a poor after sale service reputation.
Looked into having it replaced from Toyota the other day, $700 plus shipping out of melbourne.
Im now chasing upholsterers in Cairns to re-wrap it for me.
97' Prado VX Grande Emerald/Silver, 3.4L, auto, Bilstein shocks/ Dobinsons coils 2'' lift, breathers on everything, snorkel, Maxxis Bighorns. Coming before Summer, Uniden uhf, spotties and with luck a winch bar.

I don't know if the leather is different on the GXL and Kakadu but it looks like poor quality leatyher to wear out that quick.

Might be worth taking it to another dealer and see if they will push Toyota a bit harder to try to get your business?

Just found one on eBay free shipping from Japan $191

Thanks Jasen that's an option although that ebay one is vinyl, at least it would last! Also found this but I don't have wood trim. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MIT-LEXUS...item19d9ff91d6

In the mean time I'm pretty primed up to take the fight to Toyota on this one. I don't think that they can bang on about quality and then not back it up. Either they are a quality manufacturer that charges a premium for quality or they are not.

What really urks me is the blurb about premium leather in the sales brochure. I have a 20 year old premium leather lounge that gets hammered by the kids and it looks better than my steering wheel.

      Interesting info from the ACCC guidebook ‘Warranties and Refunds a guide for consumers and businesses’;
      Supply of goods
In all contracts for goods, consumers are protected by the inclusion of a number of statutory conditions and statutory warranties.
      The statutory conditions require that:
      1) Goods must be of merchantable quality – they must meet a level of quality and performance that would be reasonable to expect, given their price and description. They should also be free from defects that were not obvious at the time of purchase.
      2) Goods must be fit for their intended purpose – they should be suitable for any particular purpose the buyer made known to the seller.
      3) The goods must match the description given to the consumer, or the sample shown.

Anyway we'll see what happens. Up to now I have been pretty happy with Toyota and the way that they back up there product.

You don't necessarily need a solicitor to write such a letter. I have done it twice myself now and had a faulty dishwasher and a plasma TV not just replaced but upgraded to a higher model. I've also had a barely out of warranty (39 days IIRC) laptop repaired using the same method. You just have to write it factually and as Jasen has mentioned quoting the relevant ACCC guidelines, you lose nothing by trying.

I have a 2009 Kakadu and the leather on my steering wheel is fine. Granted it has low K's (under 50,000) and lived a relatively sedate life but it is almost 4 years old and still looks fine.

To whoever moved the thread, sorry for the new thread but I did a search before I posted and didn't find this one. Would be helpful to send a pm when you move it, thanks.

Krypto mine is wearing the same, am about to take up the fight....

Never having had a problem like this with the leather wheel on my previous cars (Holden, Honda, Mazda, Subaru), I thought this was a pretty straight forward quality / warranty issue. Seems that the 'premium' leather (quote from the sales brochure) isn't so premium!

                After only 2 years / 40000kms I had the claim rejected. The information has been pretty vague but it seems to be either because;
                1. It is just outside (6 weeks) of the 2 year warranty on trim. I can't find any mention of 2 years for trim in the warranty handbook
                2. It's regarded as 'normal wear' and tear! They also seem to be questioning my use of the vehicle and whether my hands sweat a lot? Strangely my 10 year old Honda has no such problems on the leather trim.

The dealer has been supportive, but it seems that Toyota Australia couldn't care less. What's more when Toyota Australia rejected the claim I got no information as to why and when I tried to contact them Toyota Australia said that my only recourse is through the dealer.

Anyway I've lodged an appeal as this seems completely unreasonable so we'll see how we go.

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated as this is really p#$$ing me off.

Good luck. Suggest you have a look at the ACCC Warranties guide book here http://transition.accc.gov.au/conten.../itemId/322947

Where has your steering wheel worn? My Prado is 11-2010, what month is yours?

Let us know how you go.

Steve, I would not accept this either and put up a fight. Should all fail, I have a black leather couch which had similar marks and used some leather care stuff (black cream) and it looks as new again. It may be worth a try. I bought it overseas but I am sure you can find something on the net. Fred

Crash and burn with TA. 'Damage is due to unidentifiable external factors', I wonder if that's a way of saying that you shouldn't hold the steering wheel.

I recently treated the wheel with some top grade leather treatment and that has helped. Probably should have done that regularly from new.

I've also managed to source one that is nearly new for a reasonable price.

I have been told you need to be very careful when replacing a modern steering wheel, if the replacement comes from a wreck, as they are quite flexible and can be damaged without the damage being visible. My 150 has only done 7000 klms so I will be keeping a close eye on steering wheel wear, as having a wheel re leathered is a very expensive exercise

Thanks, sounds like good advice. Apparently its cheap because I have to wash the blood off From what I can gather its come off a Prado that looks intact so maybe it was submerged (see below), no sign of water damage on the steering wheel.

Really unhappy with the TA process. I have asked for a written response to a bunch of questions that I put in a letter, but they are very reluctant to put the reason for rejection in writing.

Looks like you have done everything by the book so far Steve. As a consumer, I would expect that a steering wheel would have a life of 5-10 years before showing signs of excessive wear.

I think that your next step is to make a complaint with the ACCC and see if that will make Toyota respond to you in a professional manner.

There's a guy in wanneroo who fixes leather for all the car dealers in wangara etc, he's done some amazing jobs on cars I was looking at last year. Maybe ring Grand Toyota and ask their used car dept for his contact details, has to be cheaper than replacing the whole wheel

Edit: I should've said the wheel on the car I was looking at when I started this thread was repaired by him, the thing looked brand new in the wear areas. Too bad the car dealership was shit or I would've bought it
