  • Steering Wheel wear - warranty?

    Hey guys,

Found what we're looking for today, having a think over the weekend whether to go for it or not. Graphite 2010 petrol with 50,000 kms on it for $48K (haven't negotiated anything yet). We saw it not ready for sale at a dealer so it was in it's worse state, no real damage or marks and good service history. BUT. The only thing that worries me is the steering wheel is worn at the top, the dealer suggested perhaps the driver had rings or whatever.

Has anyone else had a worn steering wheel within 50,000 kms? If so, what are the chances of it getting replaced on warranty, or is it too bad its just wear and tear? I would've thought the wheel would've been able to handle a little use. I'm not worried about it too much as the rest of the car is pretty flawless apart from some marks on the cargo area carpet and roof lining, but as I said it hasn't even been cleaned yet. But the steering wheel is a big ticket item, if it's a few thousand to replace out of my pocket I'm not too keen.

    Cheers

Reggie, I would think if they won't warranty it a good motor trimmer could cover it again a lot cheaper than replacing it, as for the back of the car it does scratch up quite easily unfortunately, mine has done 15000 and only a few trips fully loaded but it is trashy already, u can get a rubber cargo liner to cover the carpet for around 100 bucks. Good luck they are a great car.

Simple, negotiate your best deal then when the dealer asks you to sign, tell him your not going to take it unless the wheel is replaced. Then watch him squirm...

If he agrees, make sure you get it written in the contract otherwise you will probably be greeted with a bunch of excuses when you go to pick it up.

Apart from that, it sounds like you may have yourself a pretty good deal.

Will wait until tomorrow, the dealer said he would seek a warranty replacement through Toyota (its at a Holden dealership) and get the car detailed for us to have another look at it. Just wanted to find out if wear like that is common or if it's had a hard life. The rest of the car is pretty good apart from a few marks in the cargo area etc. We're going to push for about 46K even if it's replaced, but if it's not I need to factor in the repair or replacement.

Just had a look at the car on line I am assuming same one it had a ECB bullbar, that steering wheel is quite bad, that is not from rings, I had an issues with a leather steering wheel in a Rav4 I owned which went quite bad when I got tree sap on it when doing some gardening one day. I am thinking something has come in contact with wheel. Hopefully warranty will prevail.

The private sale one we're interested on too but the dealer one has the benefit of extended warranty and easier financing. The prices of 2010's have just hit the 50k mark recently, WA prices are always higher than eastern states, everyone thinks we're rich or something

Those pics are a little misleading too, it's not cleaned but not as bad as those pics. We stumbled upon it in their holding yard behind the dealership, not on the main lot. That ECB bar will be the first thing to come off too, it's pissweak lol

Well, went back last night, steering wheel repaired like new, all marks inside gone and she came up looking really good. But the dealer wouldn't even drop the price a dollar so we walked away. Back to the drawing board!

I c u not buying now, but to throw in some answers:
I had a wheel replaced at almost 100k it was a 96 Camry.
It was wear, just have to say its premature wear, when others at same klms are not the same, then they cover it.

I also had a steering wheel replaced on a 1998 wrx.
It had well over 100k on it 3 yr unlimited k warranty.
                        They wouldn't cover gear knob.

I also had a 2006 bf Futura wheel replaced, it wasn't too bad, when I picked it up, I spoke with the warranty clerk, who I knew from another dealership we worked at, he said, it shouldn't have been replaced, they may not get paid.

My 2003 playdo is a bit worn hey, but I can live with that :-)
You can get leather repair guys that come out.
Someone I know got front seats n wheel done for about $200
                        Looked like new.

My mate works at Toyota spares and he told me sunscreen and hand lotion kills some leather wheels. But the repair on this one was first rate, looked like the factory leather.

Leather steering wheel worn out after 2years, Toyota say its normal wear!

In the last few months I started to notice some pretty heavy wear on my steering wheel in the spots where I usually hold it when driving. It is REALLY annoying because I have to look at it every time I drive the car. I didn't stress about it because I thought it was covered by Toyota's 3 year warranty....WRONG!

Never having had a problem like this with the leather wheel on my previous cars (Holden, Honda, Mazda, Subaru), I thought this was a pretty straight forward quality / warranty issue. Seems that the 'premium' leather (quote from the sales brochure) isn't so premium!

                              After only 2 years / 40000kms I had the claim rejected. The information has been pretty vague but it seems to be either because;
                              1. It is just outside (6 weeks) of the 2 year warranty on trim. I can't find any mention of 2 years for trim in the warranty handbook
                              2. It's regarded as 'normal wear' and tear! They also seem to be questioning my use of the vehicle and whether my hands sweat a lot? Strangely my 10 year old Honda has no such problems on the leather trim.

The dealer has been supportive, but it seems that Toyota Australia couldn't care less. What's more when Toyota Australia rejected the claim I got no information as to why and when I tried to contact them Toyota Australia said that my only recourse is through the dealer.

Anyway I've lodged an appeal as this seems completely unreasonable so we'll see how we go.

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated as this is really p#$$ing me off.
