Note that for the Pioneer rack to bolt onto the aerobars, requires drilling through the tracks. A bolt sticks up from underneath and a nut sits in that track. The track also allows channel nuts to slide in it and this nut will block the positioning of the channel nut. Kind of defeats the purpose of having tracks in the planks so you can put eyebolts wherever you want.

The 42102 weighs in at 25kg. The capacity on the factory roof rails is 80kg. Takeaway 25kg for the Pioneer rack and you are left with 55kg. If this is all you need, then it is fine. If you need more capacity, I would highly recommend removing the roof rails.

A roof top tent weighs 55kg and a spare is 30kg.

This is my setup with the Pioneer Platform Rack (p/no. 42103).

JPH. that is exactly what I was looking for, however when I was at the 4x4 show, I thought it was explained to me that you can use the SXB legs and mount them directly to the Pioneer rack, thus slightly lowering the height but the height of the cross bars. You are right that its then more hassle to take the rack on and off and put the cross bars back on.
I do like that set up and think this is what I will go with. Now just deciding on the 1500 or 1900 length tray. Any thoughts anyone?
Comes back to what you want to use it for APS, amts had some interesting info in his last post in regards to weights. For me the large rack is perfect for our Rhino bag or putting a ladder or some timber on. At this stage I don't intend on going down the path of the rooftop tent so a perfect set up. The SXB legs mount seperatly then the rack bolts on top, I think you can see it in an earlier photo from the back of my GXL. I'm based in Geelong, but in and out of Melbourne all the time, if you want to have a look at it in the flesh before you buy one, sing out.

        Cheers JPH

          Hi JPH,
I ended up doing the same, but also fitted the side rails. Helps with lugging the tent and all the family gear.
Not the most easiest setups for removing and replacing.
The Wife doesn't like the rack to sit up their too long. 2 choices I suppose. Either do more trips, or find an easier solution to bolt the rack into the cross bars. Escpecially with the side rails difficult to put the channel bolt into position.

          Cheers
          James

Nice work. Must admit I haven't bothered taking mine off yet, I did leave the shovel on last Sunday after the wombat night run and hit the height marker at Southland car park.. Oops I was thinking I might get the side rails for the Simpson trip and maybe a foxwing.. I would have thought it would unbolt easily and just leave the cross bars on.
            Cheers Josh

Did the rack go straight on to the Toyota branded Sportz cross bars or did you have to use Rhino specific ones? I know the Toyota ones are just re-badged Rhino bars but not sure if they are compatible. I was looking at the setup Netarch had at the GTG and I beleive he had to change the bars.

My Pio Platform came with the cross bars as part of the KIT. I did not require the Roof Rail mounts though as I already had these from my original sports bars. All you need to do is drill a couple of holes to suit your type of vehicle. The instructions that come with the platform are pretty good though. The rails that do come with the platform are cut at the correct length to fit inside the outer edges of the platform. whilst you probably could get away with using your existing rails, it's probably not worth the hassle. if you are using your original roof rail mounts, you need to be sure that they are compatible with the cross bars in the kit as there are a couple of different profile extrusion types. Your sales guy should be able to assist.

Hi JPH, I'm thinking of exactly the same setup you have. I've been looking at the setup instructions for the pioneer six platform and I'm a little concerned about the part that requires me to drill into the platform. Was this done to yours?

Yes, for the SX platform, it requires drilling into the middle of the track in the outer planks. Otherwise the outer plank is not fixed to the crossbars in any way.

Thanks for the quick response amts. Would this make the platform difficult to remove or is it a matter of a couple more screws? Also does it miniseries the protection to the platform? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks in advance.

It should be a matter of loosening 2 screws on each leg which clamps onto the roof rails. There's no need to remove the screws from the drilled holes.
