  • Turbo charger stepper curcuit

Did a little research through the forum about this didn't get any good info (only if you own a hiace with a d4d). A couple of weeks ago I did a trip in the mid north coast it was fantastic it was the waterfall way between bellagen and armidale.while coming back from a museum owned by russell crowe enjoying the drive and the power of the new roo system the check engine light came on and pradi derated in engine power so I pulled into dirt track idled pradi down and disconnected the module thinking that may be causing the issue.Got going again and all good beside check engine light still on.After about 2 hrs it went out.It did the same thing again the next day.I made some inquires with toyota. With new info I cleared the code and unpluged stepper curcuit plug's and cleaned them.So far all good no more problems but if it happen's again or constantly I may need to replace turbo.Has this happened to any other pradopointers and what was wors't case cenario.

Sounds like another name for an electronically controlled DC motor, that controls the variable vane of the turbocharger. When they mentioned if it keeps happening you may have more issues ect, they were correct. If the engine ECU detected issues with the angle of the motor and the vanes inside the turbo, it would derate the engine (limp mode, no boost). I am not 100% on this, but either the stepper set up controls he vane angles or it's a electronic boost waste gate or, as I think it is a part of both parts of the turbo.

I will look further on the net and post what I can find.

Do you know the code it showed? If you have a scan gauge or any reader that plugs into the OBD port you an see when it happens. I had 2 x code 1251 which relate to the turbo stepper I believe. Bloody annoying and I did NOT have my chip plugged in at the time but did have the harness in and capped so the chip was removed.

The old chip I had on mine was a Roo systems unit. It continually put large fuel leak codes up (P093)

I know its not the topic of the thread, but is that the Museum of interesting things? Lots or Russell Crowe memorabilia in that one and about the right area, not sure where it is because we were lost at the time Well worth a look anyway.

            Cheers Andrew

It's not the DC motor that fails, it's the solenoid. The P1251 code is a warning code in relation to the boost and it has probably peaked for a short time and thrown the code. If it stays at peak boost for to long it can damage the engine, but not normally the case in this engine because the ECM corrects this quickly. If you get the other code, P0046 code, you are up for a whole new turbo assembly as it is not sold in bits. I don't know how much it is today, but probably about the $8,000.00 mark.
Interesting to note with the P1251 code is that if you have modified your exhaust system the ECM can throw the code. Another interesting thing is that the ECM can throw this code if you get some sort of voltage drop in the battery too. It's all so linked these days with the ECM. I haven't heard of any problems with the actuator or the sensor there at this stage yet.

hey john i have heard about your knowledge on this type of issue and very ecstatic on your response. so at the moment as long as I don't get the P0046 code all should be good and i was told that a turbo is around the $6000 mark hopfully I won't be going down that path.. hey andrew it is the museum of interesting things. It is one of those places of interest you only stumble across because it's not really publicised...
