  • What is the PTC relay box next to the main fuse box?

I have been looking around my TD 150 for a good spot to mount the redarc isolator and the best solution I could find to allow an upright mount (not required, i know, just want to do it that way) was to remove the "PTC" relay box next to the main fuse box and put the redarc in between the main fuse box and the diesel filter. This seems like the best out-of-the-way area that allows an upright mount, has a flat surface to fix to and is close to the main battery.

I my vehicle, the PTC relay box has 3 fuse positions labeled PTC 1,2 and 3, with power to the input leg of the relays but none of the positions actually have relay's installed. Does this mean this box is just a generic install component for something that doesn't exist, therefore safe to remove (obviously after correctly terminating the live wires to prevent shorts)?

I did some googling and seemed to come across something called a PTC heater (basically an electric heater that complements the coolant one in a vehicle to warm the cab quicker), so would this be something used only for "cold climate" spec vehicles?

Was hoping someone could confirm before I make a few "permanent" mods!

Mine fits snug next to the battery, you have to take the battery out to install it. Make sure you put something on any holes you drill to stop them rusting.

.The PTC box is a good source of constant 12v power to power those accessories that require constant feed.
I used one of the terminals for my brake controller and one for an accessory fuse box. The accessory fuse box is switched on via a relay triggered from the 12v socket.
I have my VSR (Voltage Sensitive relay) mounted next to the battery. Remove the battery and mount it there replace the battery. That is close as you can get to the battery.

Thanks for the responses guys, i got impatient over the weekend and ripped the sucker out. My isolator is now fixed in position where it was, there is actually a flat section of guard under there that is a perfect size for the redarc isolator.

Has anyone used this box to fit aftermarket relays? I am installing relays that close when accessories is on. Would be great if I could get something organised to fit neatly into this box. Especially as it seems part wired up. Have not put a meter on it yet.

            KeenonFishing,
Did you find out what the empty relay box is for and if it is useful?
            I have the same question.
There is a bunch of cable coming from the base of it but I don't know where they go or what they can do.
I read the replies but did not understand if they were talking about the same thing
            Cheers,
            Wyperfield

I hacked mine out and put an aux fuse panel in its place. It is a nice box, but I couldn't work out an easy way to turn it into something useful.

Hi Guys, just trying to get mine out but can't figure out how to remove the box without breaking the clips. there seem to be 4 clips on each side but no matter how I tried I cannot unclip them.

On my 2018 2.8ltr Prado Limited NZ version with all the 'fruit', (like Kakadu but without extra fuel tank), those three relay positions have relays in them. I suspect they power some of the accessories such as sunroof, some of the safety stuff etc.
