ARB Underbody Protection for 120 Prado and FJ Cruiser

I have a 2005 diesel Prado and installed an ARB under body protection kit before going to the Cape. The product is fine except for the mounting bar at the rear that bolts across the gearbox cross-member. The back end of the bash plate attaches to that bar. I freely admit I took some tough options during the Cape trip (Frenchman's Track and OTL) but the back mounting bar was like butter. It badly distorted. On examination it never had a chance. it is constructed from flimsy 3mm angle with a web section of about 40mm. No need to do the bending moment calculations, you can see at a pinch that it will fail. I have shown ARB and they will ask head office for an opinion. Have other Prado Point members struck this weakness in an otherwise great product?

I had the ironman 3 peice plates installed before the strezlecki/Lake eyre trip last week....to be honest the fitter had some locating issues with the bolts...but it did fit...took a "short cut" near the old talc mine near fleeling HS and smashed into a quartz rock almost the size of a football....yep the plates got smash but have held shape pretty well....cheap insurance

i have the tjm ones, whilst they have not held shape they certainly have saved the car from iminent damage. Engine oil change can be done without removing them. Make sure you get the hose up inside them after a trip as they collect alot of mud up inside them.
            cheers

I also have the Ironman plates. They did put up a bit of a fight when locating the bolt holes but once on they fit snug and i can service the rig without removal. Im not expecting them to be crunched over hard rock over and over and over again. Being 3mm thick they offer good protection from loose road debri and will give me a chance against big damage if I pick the wrong line down a track. Bash plates are not like tank armour, they will all fail if charged into something heavy enough. Whatever you get they will be a big improvement over the tin foil from factory, but I guess your best protection is your driving style and ability minimise getting the underside of the rig in those damage risk positions in the first place.

              Cheers,

Got some ARB plates fitted up last week but I'm yet to test them out. They look well made and a neat fit though.

Due to the state of my original Toyota plates I had ARB fit them. Initially I thought I would fit them myself (bolt off bolt on job right?) - wise decision in my case to let ARB do it as three of the old bolts were buggered and needed 'mechanical removal'. Beyond my capabilities at home on the garage floor - much easier on a hoist at ARB whilst I wandered round the shop.
