  • New Evakool 12/240v fridge??????

    Hi,

Anybody seen or heard much about these. I saw it at BCF and the sales guy didn't have much to say except Engel, Engel, Engel.

While i have no problem with Engel and i would love to have 1 this new evakool is $700 cheaper for a 60l model. I can see this on their site
    http://www.evakool.com/products?sprod=157

but also found this when looking up their compressor

    http://colkufridge.en.made-in-china....e-DC-62P-.html.

These look to be the same fridge.

Always dubious of China rebadge but i also know a load of companys that are finally sourcing some decent quality gear out of there.

So far i can't find anything in the way of commentary so thought i would ask?

    Cheers

My Wife's future shopping list includes in order a Winch (Most likely a Tigerz), Bash Plates, Rear Bar, Dual Battery setup and a 60l Fridge. And the list gets longer each time we talk about the car.

Mate just brought one, they have a 5 year warranty which was what sold him.

2 x Friends have a RF40 and RF60lt Evakool beasties (the white ones) between them and never let them down, one was purchased secondhand. We know the freezer section works well as my kids enjoy the ice blocks that sometimes make it too camp

        Hi Muddles,

The RF Evakool fridges are well known as they are the original Evakool fibreglass ice box with a Danfross powered fridge unit attached at one end. The fibreglass ice box section is great for insulation etc and as such these are excellent fridges, a little awkward with their shape though. These RF fridges have the 5 year warranty.

I personally have no experience with the "new" RV range which have the chinese copy compressor and "modern" design but that Evakool only give it a 2 year warranty tells me Evakool are not overly confident about the chinese build themselves.

That said I have had one of Derek Bester's ABR fridges now for 4 years and it has been brilliant so being a "no name" brand/build is not necesarily a bad thing.

It would depend on how often & duration you will be using it, that is a weekender or a 1 week outback trip across the simpson where reliability is paramount whether or not you save a few dollars (or a lot) and take a punt on a new model fridge.

The new evakool have a danfoss compressor the same as the waeco and 5 yr warranty on everything. Just like this one.

Yes that one does but Muddles link was to the RV range sold exclusively by BCF and they only have a 2 yr warranty and use a Colku compressor which is a Danfoss copy. A major reason I believe why the Evakool RV range is cheaper and only sold by BCF

The 5 yr warranty on danfoss compressors is a major plus for me when compared to others.

            Just my opinion, Lee

Yes correct Lee, the IB(ice box) range is the one I was looking at, confused as my mate got his through BCF.

Aren't danfoss compressors made in China anyway?

being made in China doesn't make it good, bad or otherwise...it all depends on who runs the quality control function at the plant. Many companies who outsource manufacturing there also run their own quality control on the goods made

I think the concern here is that it looks like this series isn't just made for evakool so it could just be any old tom dick or harry doing quality as the second link suggests it a generic, so that being to case i will assume the worst until proven otherwise and see about saving the extra coin for an engel.

Now to go look at hutch's fridge box build and add that to any fridge costs.

                      Hi Muddles,

As Josh has said chinese made is not necessarily a bad thing however the 2 year vs 5 year warranty is a factor.
The Engel range have a great track record but in my opinion one certainly does pay too much extra for the Engel.
The "original" Evakools are certainly good value for money and the ARB range appear to be good value as well.

One thing I would do before buying is make up a dummy fridge out of cardboard or similar in the dimensions of your preferred fridge and place it in the back of the Prado to see exactly how much space you "lose". The 60 litre fridges tend to be wider compared to the 40 -50 litre sizes. Narrow and tall may suit your needs better conversely the wider models may be better if you intend to fit drawers at some stage, the width is the one issue I have with my ABR fridge (especially on a custom drop slide) but then i have a 90 series which is not as wide of beam as the later, less capable models

                        Hi Muddles

The only issue with the evercool Esky style fridge freezers if that ( I haven't looked in a while ) the cooling element only goes half way around the fridge where the engels and weacos etc there element surrounds the whole compartment.
The issue I found with this ( a mates one ) is that if you only need a fridge you need rotate you food or like us end up with frozen milk and warm beer. However if you do want it as a fridge freezer they do work well.

for me a fridge a was better as the only thing id freeze is meat and i can criovac that so for that reason I went for an engel fridge 40lt great for weekends I later upsized to a 60lt as I started doing longer trips and now with a family I find it a great size.

Do your research and work out what your main use weekend or long trips, buget do you have duel batteries? and limits in size and how much you want to keep cold
ie my engel 60lt will hold food, drinks, snacks for two adults and 1 kid and almost a carton of beer for a weekend trip and when we travel longer I put less beer in.
they cost alot to set up but you'll love it
                        Good luck have fun shopping.
