  • Light Truck Tyres for Kakadu 18'' rims, anyone ?

    Hello,

First post for me. I am the very proud and ridiculously happy new owner of a second hand 150 Kakadu, and I'm afraid I've already been infected by that terrible modifieitis disease you all seem to be suffering from.

I've been lurking around this site for a while, learning as much as I could, but even reading all these threads, and asking around, I can't seem to be able to find a suitable light truck AT tyre for the 18'' rims.

I understand the switch to 17'' option, but I'd like to try to keep the current wheels ones for now.

So far I can see that both Coopers and Mickey Thomson do an OE replacement in 265/60R18, but in passenger build only. Their light truck ones are bigger and likely to rub, even with that 2'' lift I'm planning to put in.

Has anyone found a light truck AT tyre for the 18'' rims that you're happy with ?

    Cheers,
    Kakadu13

Some of the Landrover guys are putting on 285 x 60 x 18 Cooper Zeon LTZ's.

They are not LT rated but XL+ with 120S Load Rating.

In Muds there is 275 x 65 x 18 Maxxis -could be a bit big though.

Another option is BFG all Terrains in 265 x 65 x 18 - expensive though

    Cheers

Cooper AT3 do a LT 18" , 275/60/18 or similar in stead of factory 265 width non LT.

Are you only sourcing your tyres from Australia? Importing them opens up a whole range of options. One could argue that you could face problems if you have a blow-out and need a replacement, but you'll also save enough to be able to buy a 6th tyre and still come ahead. There's also the argument that if you buy a tyre that's not stocked in Australia, and you have a blow-out while you're travelling, you won't be able to access the 6th spare tyre and will end up with mixed tyres on your car. If you've got 18's then you're choice of offroad tyre is already very limited anyway.

Just putting an option out there.

            That's a good point mickmac42, I might have a look into that.

I also wrote Cooper who tell me that with a 2" lift on the Kakadu, their LT 275/65R18 should fit without rubbing.
Is that really going to work? My local tyre shop wasn't so sure

Thanks Kakadaz, you've already been a great source of information and inspiration

I see your LTZ 285/60 were just rubbing a little bit after lift. Maybe the Coopers being 275/65 might just fit. Was the issue on width or height?

the 275x65's do fit (AT3's LT) mine is a width issue so 275's would be spot on but saying that I do like my Zeons.look at the thread "has anyone upgraded their tyres on a VX or Kakadu" I posted a picture of the AT3"s 275x65 from a member.

yes the regulations are a joke, thats why i dropped the 18s for 17s just to get decent legal rubber.

Does anyone know this? Or how large you can go in an 18" tyre and still retain the spare wheel cover as my wife cares about astethics

wheel cover wont fit with the 275s. u'll need a spacer to stop it from rubbing on the door aswell. kaymar do them for around $130

Will it fit with the spacer or it just won't fit at all with a 275?

the tire will fit on the door with spacer, but cover wont fit over that tire. when you fit the spacer to the door the back piece of the cover has to be removed. so the outer piece has nothing to clip to if it did fit over tire anyway.
