In May and June this year, my family (me, wife and 2 boys age 12 and 9) spent 5 weeks traveling through central western Queensland.
Starting from Brisbane, we drove a circuit which took us through the outback - Carnarvon Gorge, Charleville, Longreach, Winton, Richmond, and Hughenden.
From Hughenden, we headed to Townsville and followed the coast south through Bowen, Airlie Beach, Mackay, Emu Park and Town of 1770 before returning to Brisbane.
While not specifically an off-road holiday, we were nonetheless glad to be driving the 120. Plenty of gravel, black-soil and clay roads in various states of repair and/or wetness.
Accommodation was a mix of tent camping, on-site cabins, and a couple of holiday units.
For anyone traveling near Winton, I warmly recommend a visit to Carisbrooke Station. Great camping, and magnificent views, and a number of driving tracks to explore. The host family, the Philott's, are some of the most hospitable folk you are likely to meet.
We kept the troops busy and entertained with bush-walking, building camp fires, fossicking (opals, fossils, thunder eggs), snorkeling, whale-watching and general sight-seeing.
Despite 5 weeks in 24/7 company, we somehow managed not to “lose” any of the kids... In fact, the kids are excitedly plotting their next big adventure!
Anyway, here are a handful of photos. Thanks for looking! Paul
