If your model has ABS then it reads the speed via the ABS sensors on both n/s/f & o/s/f wheel sensors.

If it is like mine (None ABS) then it reads from the sensor on the rear of the gearbox output shaft that leads to the rear Axel. Same on the auto none ABS (120 series).

    Cheers

        Hi,

For us with no mechanical knowledge pretty much haha what is /s/f & o/s/f wheel sensors? Mine has ABS. I am looking at installing a yellr box speedo calibrator and wondering if I can get the plug and play or have to splice the wiring thats why I ask.

        Thanks

        Troy

            Gday Troy1

N/S/F & O/S/F means Near/Side/Front and Off/Side/Front.... Near side being closest to the kirb (Gutter) and Front being the front of the vehicle 0f course.

I think that the above terminology is old school talk (My age is showing) so i think i should have used the term L/H/F Meaning Left/Hand/Front. The left and right of the vehicle is always distinguished from sitting in the driver seat position so that there is no confusion of left and right.... (Obviously if you stand at the front of the vehicle Left becomes right).... That is why the spare parts guys always want to confirm with you when ordering parts if it is on the drivers or passenger side of the car.

L/H/F speed sensor has two wires... Green & Red.. green is positive+ & Red is negative-

R/H/F speed sensor has two wires... Blue & Pink.. Blue is positive+ & Pink is negative-

L/H/R speed sensor has two wires... Green & Red.. green is negative- & Red is positive+

R/H/R speed sensor has two wires... White & Black.. White is negative- & Black is positive+

            Hope this helps!

            Cheers

PS. If ABS then all 4 x sensors are used for speed. (must not tap into these wires for speedo calibration).

              Hey Skywalkerrun,

Thanks for the reply. I am looking at a Yellr speedo calibration system. www.yellr.com
They are made here in aus. They have a plug and play model suited to prado but i think that is for the model with out ABS at this stage i cant work it out. i might post pics and someone can tell me :-). The follwing pics are showing what the plug and play yellr in compatable with. They sent me these pics. Other wise gta spice wires and stuff which is way above my mechanical knowledge and dont wanna stuff anything. Yes mine has ABS. Click images to make larger. Hope I am not too confusing.

              Cheers Troy

Hi there Skywalkerrun, if it reads from the rear of the gearbox shaft that leads to the Diff but bushbasher has removed both front and rear shafts then why is it still reading ?? Nothing should be turning the gearbox ?? Im just curious as I have never had to tow my vehicle but if I had to for future reference it would be good to know exactly what I need to do so as not to do any damage to my gearbox/transfer etc. Is it true you should put the transfer into neutral before towing ?? I was told unless all shafts are removed from any AWD then it needs a flat bed tow ?? Also read that in an automatic (even if placed neutral) you need to do this as the pump in the auto box wont be supplying oil BUT all the internal parts will be still turning and if towed for long enough will cook the guts of the tranny ?? Please excuse all my questions but really want to know the correct procedure for towing in the event I had to..........Cheers Steve

                      Gday Troy1

The pics that you are showing is of the speedo sensor being on the rear of the gearbox which is none ABS

With ABS it has 1 x sensor on all 4 x wheels then the data is sent to the ECU.

The none ABS only reads from one sensor on the rear of the gearbox.

The pictures that you are showing is of the none ABS.

                      Cheers

                        Gday Steve M

Bushbasher's rig is a Jan 09 GXL so i believe it comes with ABS so his speed reading's will be coming off the sensors on his wheels.... If it was a GX (None ABS) like mine then the sensor speed reading would be coming off the sensor at the rear off the gearbox out-put shaft that leads to the rear axle.

You should not never tow an auto as it winds the gearbox up and burns the clutch drum out due to whinding it up.

As far as towing a manual with the transfer into neutral im not so sure i would be comfortable with it.

As far as Bushbasher removing both his drive-shafts due to not having the option of a flat-bed was obviously a very smart approach and is what i also would have done

                        Cheers

Hi There again skywalkerrun, Myn does have ABS (05 GXL Auto) which is only referring the speedo, my main question is so if I had to tow, by pulling the drive shafts out is it then ok to tow?? Obviously would only be doing this if I was in Bushbashers predicament but is worth knowing in case. With rear shaft removed and front shaft removed their should be no reason I cant be towed ?? or am I still missing some thing ?? Also with removing shafts is there any seals that I would need to be carefull of and do I need to shove a rag in anywhere or would it be safe or is oil going to piss out everywhere from where the shafts were removed.........I thought the transfer issue of moving to neutral was for auto or manual ?? Cheers steve

                            Gday Steve M

This is so off topic now but will answer best i can anyway

If you remove both drive shafts (That being the propeller shafts x 2) 1 x from Rear differential housing on the rear axle to the rear gearbox out-put shaft, the other one goes from the gearbox transfer housing to the front axle differential housing...

The propeller shafts have uni-joints on them with grease nipples. (Not both L/H/F & R/H/f front CV shafts "Constant Velocity" or the rear axle).

Steve M Quote: if I had to tow, by pulling the drive shafts out is it then ok to tow??

Skywalker Answer: Yes it is ok to tow but if the engine is not running you also have to be aware of the fact that you no longer have a boosted brake system or power steering which would give a heavier steering and it would also be "a lot" harder to pull the vehicle up to a standstill when braking... (By law you are not supposed to flat tow any vehicle without a steel straight bar on a public highway).

Steve M Quote: With rear shaft removed and front shaft removed their should be no reason I cant be towed ??

Skywalker Answer: yes it is fine to be towed whilst off public highway when not using a steel straight-bar and if you have un-bolted and removed both front and rear Propeller shaft's (Tail shaft) then there will be no fear of loosing diff oil or transmission oil as both of the propeller shafts are bolted to flanges from both ends of the shafts so no diff or gearbox oil will be lost.

May i also add that it is important to not let the propeller shaft separate from the slip-joint on the propeller shaft as the yokes are alined opposite to each other to keep the shaft balanced and swivel freely... if you have the need to separate the slip joint on the propeller shaft then it is imperatively important to mark it first before separating.

Steve M Quote: I thought the transfer issue of moving to neutral was for auto or manual ??

Skywalker Answer: Is an obvious answer for the auto but not fully sure on the manual even though it has a hi/lo syncro hub as i have never pulled one apart so i would still remove both unless there is someone out there who knows the 4x4 AWD gearbox and can confirm otherwise.

The way i see it is if you can diss-engage the transfer selector on the manual gearbox then why not on the auto gearbox? Meaning: if theory is ok for the manual gearbox then why not just remove the rear propelling shaft only on the Auto gear box and then put the transfer selector in neutral instead of removing both propelling shafts?....... I still personally would still remove both propelling shafts un-less some can confirm otherwise!

                            Cheers
