  • Altitude radio/satnav - additional usb port?

My last Prado had outlived its lease and it was time for a change. The Altitude took my fancy and I signed up. The salesman, although he was great to deal with, told me the stereo would link via bluetooth to my iphone for music. This is not the case. My lovely wench will happily tell you I'm forever cursing the morons on commercial radio and telling them to "stop yapping and play some music". Unfortunately they don't listen to little old me and keep spewing forth their dribble to fill the gap between the ads.

I'm not happy plugging and unplugging my iphone every time I drive, so here's my question ...
Does anyone know what the wiring arrangement is at the back of the satnav/radio system? Is the usb port on the console simply an extension of a usb port mounted into the back of the radio or is it hard wired into the radio. Ie, can I unplug the existing port and plug in an ipod at the back of the radio then tuck it away under the dash/in the glovebox as a (semi)permanent music source?

    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Waz.

    Hey Waz,
I'm not sure about the answer to your question, and I was also a little annoyed about not streaming music via Bluetooth from my iPhone...
I ended up just picking up a 16G iPod and leaving it constantly plugged into the USB. The iPod just sits next to it in the little square holder.

    Cheers,

    Jeff

That was the first option I considered but scrapped the idea very quickly. I would think having an ipod sitting out in the open is an invitation for a crook. If I can connect an ipod and hide it, then it can remain connected and not invite trouble.

Hey waz! I too just took hold of an altitude! What I did in your situation was buy an 8gb mini usb stick and copy my entire music play list from my itunes onto it and put it in the usb slot. I will leave it in there full time and as its a mini you dont even know its there!

There is no USB port on the back of the unit, the one in the console is wired through the vehicle.
Do the mini USB stick thing, it's the easiest way.

Hi Waz, I do this. Have an iPod Classic with a full backup of my music and photos and leave it permanently plugged in (every now and then update it from the computer). I bought a black USB to iPod cable and have it trailing down between the console and driver's seat. There is a nice little slot on the floor that the iPod sits snugly in and doesn't jump around or move at all. The black cable means it blends in well. No-one would know there is an iPod there.

Is this an Altitude only problem? With the GXL I have the phone linked into the stereo via Bluetooth and it works without issue.

I was also dismayed with my Altitude to discover that i couldnot Stream music via bluetooth. I believe that the stereo / sat nav installed is the same as in the Kakadu and VX and the issue is common to this unit only.

One odd thing though, I was o the phone one day which was not connected to the vehcle, that is i was using it by hand not via bluetooth although it was connected that way only, not via cable. when i tried to choose bluetooth via the phone menu it started playing music via bluetooth whislt i was still on the phone via the handset. Odd huh... obviously a bug somewhere but I have been unable to replicate, but it makes me think it is somhow possible, perhaps via a hack in either the phone or the car.

Seem to be limited to the Altitude. Somewhere on this forum I read that the software for the Altitude was dumbed down a bit compared to the GXL and Kakadu. Not sure why but it seems to be a backward step.

I ended up buying a very small size 16Gb USB stick (http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XH49...x-backup-drive) from Dick Smith and dumping my music into folders based on the artist. The stick sits in the usb socket and is hardly noticeable except for the rubber cover flap sitting up. Now I can listen to something other than the idiots talking crap on the commercial stations.

Thanks for all the replies and the suggestions, especially GLXMAN for giving me the idea of using a usb stick.

                        Waz.

It's also the same in the VX. The Altitude uses the same SatNav as the VX and Kakadu.

I have to use my iPod connected via USB to play music through the stereo as my iPhone would no connect to play music via bluetooth. It only connects for phone calls etc.

                          Cheers,

are they seperated into folders or just songs?

one thing i noticed with 32gb is its slow... slow to sort and display songs. Try sorting into folders that you will know where is what ie genres or dance tunes rap tunes etc...

i found sorting into folders sped up the search and display process a bit not brilliant but its not that good.. its definitely better than just having 8000 individual songs for it to find and display

i referenced times off my brothers latest kenwood deck touchscreen etc.. and same memory stick sorted the prado lags behind by about 3 seconds..
