I intend to do some travelling around Aust and had been considering the idea of being able to sleep in the car when the weather, conditions or timing did not suit setting up a swag on the ground. After installing the shelf in the rear of the car I looked for a way that I could add to the combined flat area made by the shelf and the (folded) second row seats, and came up with something simple but that works pretty well. A prado is never going to be a camper van, but having used this a few times I found it works well (I am 6'4").
Using a bit of form ply I had lying around, I cut it to size and covered it with some carpet I had left over from the rear shelf. How to attach it to the rear head rests had me stumped for a while, but I came upon the idea of using the hanging hooks and hooking them onto the arms that the headrests extend on. Job done!
Enough room to squeeze in the swag. For ventilation sans bugs, I bought a set of window sox so I could have the window down a bit and keep the bugs out.
When not in use the extension piece thingy hides behind the seats, and in a jam I could use it as a hi-lift jack base in the sand etc.
