I have searched the net and watched lots of youtibe clips but still have not been able to work out what I'm doing wrong. I can remove the valve and hoses but cannot get the elbow off. I am not able to slide it off the retaining bolts due to a big chunk of metal, bolted to the engine block, preventing it coming off.
Do i need to complete disassemble the engine or is there a special tool that is needed to access bolts?
Any help would be great as I have been attempting to clean the egr for weeks now.
Hi Mack, if that "big chunk of metal, bolted to the engine block" is the same as the black vertical spike looking metal bar with the larger head in the photo, then I agree, it made the job much harder when I did my elbow clean. I did not remove it as I was not sure if the bolts were part of the head bolts so decided to work around it but made the job much harder. Perhaps somebody knowledgeable about this, like ####, could let us know if that spike looking bar can be removed without any trouble.

      • That is the metal I was referring to. The only purpose i could see it serves is to prevent the egr from being removed. Many hours of frustration caused by it so far!

        • If you are talking bout the black painted steel support bracket for the egr valve, yes it bolts to the head with 2x12mm bolts. You will need a 12mm crows foot spanner to access them because the fuel pipes are in the way.
I don't need to remove it, when I do egr cleans.
It takes me 4 hrs & I've done a few.
Remove windscreen wipers and plastic trims first.
There is so much stuff to remove, to do it right without risks.
This is why I have not written a novel About it. Not yet anyway.

Now ya tells us. Mack just go for the bolt that holds the EGR to that bracket; use a spanner or 3/8 socket to loosen it then you can probably spin it the rest of the way by hand.

            • Hi All, I'm just at the begin stages of prepping my 2010 D4D for the big lap, I have got all the bits and pieces to do the EGR Blanking 7mm hole, catch can
etc but I thought I would check the unit for build up and holy crap, needs cleaning big time. My question is looking down into the manifold ( with EGR off) makes me want to rip that off for clean as well, at least a 8 mm build up on the surfaces, Is this major job? is it worth doing?
Also if I'm this far down with 97k on the clock should I be chucking a set of injectors through her at the same time?
Would like to say thanks to all who contribute to the great info on this forum, I look forward to contributing in someway myself.
              Cheers.

              • Hey Flukie,
I cleaned my manifold at similar kms to yours. It was disgusting all the way to the ports and I am glad I did it. But it is a bastard of a job. Professionals would take in the 5-6 hour range for this job; I spent half of Sunday pulling it off, 2 evenings cleaning and a final evening reassembling. And heaps of swearing at Toyota for not being so easy to work on any more. I'm inclined to recommend just cleaning to the elbow unless you're up for at least a day of pain. Buy heaps of carby cleaner (I used 5 cans).
I used a catch can for a while but took it off after cleaning the manifold as it was clear it was doing feck nothing. And there are concerns that it dries out the crap going through your intake system causing more wear.

                Good luck!
                G.

From having egr elbow off, it takes me 7 hrs to remove, clean & put back to that point. Not fun.
Yes time for new Injectors & pipes. Update to new DENSO they are full DLC for you.
I can get you a kit if you like to d.i.y. But big job.

Very easy to install. Took about 5 mins.

1GD plate with 7mm hole next to a 1KD plate. EGR pipes are bigger on the 1GD.

Installed on the Driver side near the firewall. You can just see the tab sticking out. Pretty stealthy.

Is it a much easier install on the 1GD than the 1KD? true 5 mins install? Did you throw any codes?

Are noticing any difference in performance? I have the same plate but reluctant to install due to error codes occurring. Be interesting to see if you do not get any codes.

                      • Well it took me the best part of a week to do but the thing is running smooth as silk. New dlc injectors and lines .full egr + manifold clean with blanking plate 7mm hole. Valve clearance check .Second fuel filter plus replaced the other 2 . Catch can. Engine flush and cooling system flush . Removed the chip and had the thing remapped. Absolutely chuffed to know things are healthy inside.
Will monitor the intake re catch can and experiment with and with out.
Cheers to #### for hooking me up with the injector kit, sorry to hassel you on holiday. Thanks again.

                          • My EGR plate with 7mm hole went in today. I will be very interested in what impact apart from cleaner intake. I did notice smoother idling on the way home and the engine seemed quieter - or was I just 'wishing that'?

                            • I have a new (to me) 2014 gxl, 97k kms. I wonder what the intake looks like? If I take a peak in the top and it doesn't look too bad, can I just slip in an EGR plate and hope for the best? Cheers

                                Clean it.
You are pulling half of it apart to get plate in anyway.
