  • TJM T13 Poor Fitment

A colour coded TJM T13 bar was fitted to my new Prado today at TJM. I will be raising the following issues with the store manager tomorrow.

    1. Warn winch was being fitted and apparently now doesn't work. I bought it new 2 years ago and used it once. Was removed from my last Prado and is in perfect condition! I'm sure they didn't earth the solenoid or something.

    2. My wife took the Prado to get the bar fitted. I would assume that she would inspect prior to paying; apparently not!

    3. The bar appears to be uneven measured from the eyebrows/bodywork:

    Left side
    Forward gap 19 mm
    Height gap. 19.5 mm

    Right side
    Forward gap 9 mm
    Height gap 16 mm

    4. The paint thickness is inconsistent and ranges from 140um to 300um. The paint finish is rough in some areas.

    5. One of the plastic shroud clips from on top of the radiator was broken and reinstalled without repair or replacement;

I am posting this so others are aware of possible installation issues to address with their installers prior to their bars being fitted.

Point 2 won't be raised with the dealer. It you get your wife to do something for you (like getting an accessory fitted to your car), ensure you provide clear and concise instructions on what they are supposed o do and what to check for. If possible, put it in writing to avoid dispute later on when for when the wife denies being hgiven instruction.

How may I ask did you measure the thickness of the paint?

I have spoken to the store manager and they will be correcting the fitting alignment of the bar and replacing the plastic clip on Saturday.

In regards to measuring the paint thickness, I have a Positector 6000 and a calibration kit. Very handy tool for inspecting car for spray repairs ect.

My Bar (T13) Has also been painted quite poorly I'm on my second set of infill panels first set were shocking (painted by a blind man using his teeth to hold a .50c red-dot paintbrush) yes that bad. I will one day have the bar properly painted but couldn't be bothered fighting it with them and being inconvenienced. Its Poor the price these things cost and a paint shop can't paint them right first time...

            Nath,

Which TJM store was it? I've had some work by TJM at Coopers Plains and was also less than impressed with the quality of the workmanship. Thankfully mine were only minro issues that were easier to fix myself than to take the vehicle back to them.

I have quite a bit of TJM stuff fitted and it seems to be good gear. The installation however was not. This was at Coopers Plains.

1/ Snorkel nut came loose within 500km of fitment

2/ Air bag inflation point had the bracket not bent enough which meant 1 side let the air out continually. Found this by chance when I checked them after 500km.

3/ Front strut bushes look suss. According to the crew at Tamworth TJM these bushes have failed on a number of XGS Gold strut installs. They were taking up the issue with TJM H.O. In my case it may just be the outer rubber cover on the bush that looks bad.
This is how they looked at the 500km mark-

I've now done 5000km and no signs of there actually being worn strut bushes so I'll just keep my eye on them. The ride is heaps better than standard springs/shocks for both on and off road.

4/ All 3 screws holding the plastic inner guard into the bullbar rattled out on one side. Approx 2500kms after fitment. No springwashers were used. This caused the inner guard to rub on the front wheel at 90-100km/h due to wind. I bodged a repair with some screws out of my DIY cargo bay mods so I could get home.

5/ Took it back to the branch on return home after already sending them photos of the problem. This is how it was "fixed". Yes it's true, the springwashers are all bigger than the screw heads. I went and bought the correct sized springwasher and fixed it myself.

These problems were all made worse by the fact that I was on a 2 week trip for work through country NSW at the time. 12 plus hour days with plenty of night driving. It became a waiting game just to see if something else would go wrong with the work.

In defence of the TJM brand I will say their National dealer network did some good. Top marks to the Tamworth guys, Eggs and his crew, who squeezed me in at short notice to check the snorkel and airbag issue. Much appreciated thanks!

After pushing the point I have been offered what I consider a very small refund by Coopers Plains. If I want any more gear I will shop elsewhere. If TJM is the brand I want at the time I will buy it from Brendale

Warren, i can tell the bushes have failed because the fitter has tighten the nut whilst the car has been up in the air, this should be done whilst the car is off the hoist. Brendale also uses a bit of locktight on all screws and nuts.

I agree, tightening the bushes with suspension at full droop has caused many failures and not just the bush itself. If the bush binds, it puts pressure on the weld above the bush mount and over time that can also fail.

Rob/peter - i would suspect the same only i had numerous ph calls during the initial install process and the car was lowered before everything tightened up. The crew at Tamworth thought the same as you guys and that's why they took the bolt out to inspect the bush. No movement yet so it could just be the outer rubber that looks bad.

Re the OP, part of the problem with painting bullbars might come down to branches sub-contracting the paint job for colour coding. Little chance of consistant quality control when there's numerous different suppliers of this part of the job nationally.

You would think all the TJM stores would have to follow a strict procedure when fitting any components.
It shouldn't matter what TJM store you have items fitted, they all should be the same.
Clearly this isn't the case and they just make it up as they go. It seems the job is only as good as the experienced/non-experienced fitter.
All workmanship should be followed up by a QC inspection before delivery/handover.

Thanks for the tip on the Coopers Plains store. I went there to get a quote on some items as its only 100 meters from my work. I won't be going to see them from now on. Might have to go to ARB across the road!

                              Cheers,
