I'm planning a trip from Melbourne to Ayers Rock and would like some feedback on what to see and where to camp once I am beyond William Creek. I can be self sufficient for 4-5 days and bush camp. I will be single vehicle (other vehicle pulled out) but most of the time there should be some traffic??
The itinerary so far is Melbourne/Burra/Willow Springs/Farina/Dalhousie Springs/Old Andado Station/Chambers Pillar/Ruby Gap/Alice Springs/Finke River Gorge/Kings Canyon/Ayers Rock/Coober Pedy/somewhere near home/home. I only have 21 days.
I have been through Flinders Ranges before and have decided to camp at Willow Springs and give the skytrek tour a go. Hopefully I have enough time to check out Wilpena Pound properly too.
The Farina stopover is to catch up with some mates coming back from the cape via the Birdsville Track
Once I get beyond William Creek I am in unchartered waters. I know I have to get a desert parks pass (either William Creek hotel or Oodnadatta Roadhouse). Am hoping to also get over a few dunes of the Simpson Desert as I am spending 2 nights at Dalhousie Springs (due to long drive from Farina) and I wouldn't mind having a bit of fun. Was thinking of a picnic lunch somewhere - any thoughts/ideas?
Not sure of the road from Dalhousie to Old Andado nor what camping is available. I believe it is possible. Any suggestions?
I will check out Lamberts Centre and Chambers Pillar. Will camp there unless I have enough time to get to Alice.
Then I want to head out to Ruby Gap. I was thinking of checking out Ndhala Gorge? I only planned 2 days before heading back to Alice. I have never been to the East MacDonalds. Is there anything else out there and is 2 days enough?
Then back to Alice and out to Stanley Chasm and the other gorges and down the Finke River Gorge and on to Kings Canyon. Are permits required here?
From there I plan to head to Ayers Rock/Olgas then turn for home and start hiking it home.
If I have enough time I might go home via Great Ocean Road.
Thanks in advance.
Tim
