  • Always Shell after I cooked the bores on a 4Runner 10 years ago, bad fuel was the call. I have had no issues to date with my Prados running Shell Diesel, lucky I shop at Coles as well, saved $45.00 on my last refuel using 40c off tickets. I'd be happy to use BP or Caltex and prefer to use higher use Diesel stops (truck stops etc.).

I stay far away from the quiet independents.

    • Well i used Shell was a year ago trying to run the aquariums low as we were going to the snowfall and was going to refuel with downhill diesel fuel. In frustration had to use Shell to get through to the next BP within 24 kilometers the motor had improved, clatter.

      • Metro Independants for me

I have to pay for the Diesel that I use, so I am more sensitive to economy than most. I have done a lot of testing in my commuter vehicle (Hyundai I30) as I travel more than 90,000 km every year to work and back.

I agree with the use of BP, as this gives me the best economy. 7 eleven also gives me the same economy that BP gives me. I did notice that the 7 eleven I generally filled at had a Shell tanker filling the tanks, I asked the driver if 7 eleven always used Shell because when filling with Shell, my vehicle uses significantly more diesel than 7 eleven. The driver explained to me that independant Shell and 7 eleven, use a different bulk tank at the Clyde refinery, than the Shell/Coles branded stations use.

I use the iPhone app called Road Trip to give me acurate consumption details. When I was filling with Shell Coles branded diesel I could not get 3 days commuting to a tank, however with BP or 7 eleven I got 3 days. I downloaded the data into and excel spreadsheet and crunched some numbers and found that the Diesel had to be 7.1 cents per litre cheaper at the Shell Coles branded station I was using, to break even with BP or 7 eleven. Caltex Wooworths has to be 4.3 cents per litre cheaper for the same break even point.

For the last few months I have been using a new Metro that has recently opened. This guy is also a Mobil distributer. I get almost the same consumption data, (only 0.2 litres per 100km more) when using this fuel and it is always a minimum of 8 cents per litre cheaper than the big name servos. He is also very busy so I can imagine he would have a good turn over ratio on his Diesel.

I notice no difference to the power or engine noise from any service station.

So we would be very unlikely to see you in your car traveling anywhere near the middle of this great land then?

The title is "best diesel fuel" which probably equates more to quality. The shiny big sign out the front is not always a guarantee of quality.

                    • Just like to point out, the truck in the video is travelling East on the TransCanada Highway, just past Lac Des Arc. Mount John Laurie in the background, often referred to as the gateway mountain to Alberta's Rocky Mountians. Sorry to be off topic, but after driving that route for 30 years to go skiing, I can pick it out instantly!

On topic though, I tend to use Shell as a preference, and when I fill both tanks I add in Liquid Molly's Diesel Conditioner.

Most of our company D4D Hiluxes fill up with United or Woolies Diesel, and we have never had injector problems. One of the utes was just traded at 278,000kms.
thread dig but anyone else happy with united diesel, I run there E85 in my VE commodore with lots of mods and never any fuel issues.

The local untied always has diesel cheaper than other servos around

                        • I started using a new local United which opened with a promo price of 10c/L less than the BP I was using.
Haven't noticed any difference except in the wallet.
ATM it's 7c/L difference so I'll keep giving them a go!

                          • Just because its branded one brand doesn't mean its there fuel, depending on where you are they share fuel to keep there servos in stock to save on a lot of transport
