I use a BP card and always attempt to use BP fuel where possible, and have the fuel card report as proof of purchase just in case I get a bad batch of fuel. On trips, if I am towing the boat or camper and have to fill up elsewhere, I add a bottle of Whyns Diesel treatment (which is also a diesel fuel cetaine booster). If I have to fill up elsewhere and I'm not towing anything, I add some Chemtech diesel fuel treatment. If using jerry cans I always add some Chemteck, as it supposedly helps with handling water in the fuel.
The additives definatelly make a difference to performance and a small improvement in economy when driving on the highway, but I think its good insurance for either low cetaine diesel fuel or if there is some water in the fuel. So far no problems and the Prado is starting, idling and purring beautifully after 71,000km. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

I use Caltex Vortex and am happy with it, no BP Ultimate in NQ for comparison. Have tried standard BP diesel no noticible difference in performance but economy down a little.

I buy Bp, but its pretty obvious you buy whatever is available when in remote areas. A good quality diesel additive is always kept in the Prado as well.

I can't quite come to terms with one brand of diesel being the only way to go, after all a lot of the time I don't have a choice anyway.

agreed I will use BP if it's there but having done about 20,000km outback over the last 3 years, you learn to fill up when and where it is needed and plan for fuel stops in general not specific brands...There may be subtle differences in overall fuel economy between blends/brands but so far I believe I can only see less than 1/2 litre per 100km difference between flavours, but many environmental aspects of where you are driving will have a bigger impact on this anyhow.

always get a receipt, but why do you need so many fuel additives??

is there really any difference between brands as in Sydney we are the only capitol with two oil refineries,
so they all get there full from the Shell or Caltex refinery and while working near the Shell refinery i saw a few BP trucks going in and out
and in other states it all comes from the same place.
so I dont see where the difference is between brands?

                Gday pete8205

I like your observation.... I'm with you on this unless proved otherwise.

This is information on the BP web sight and i have looked from back to front and there is nowhere that it states "Guaranteed" no less than 50+ Cetane level but it does state average 50+ cetain "but" never below 46 cetain!

BP Diesel Fuel Quality Blurb and i am excited!... But still "NO" guarantee's of 50+ Cetane here.
                http://www.bp.com/retail/ultimateart...tentId=7072810

More wonderful blurb but still no 50+ Cetane guaranteed but i an nearly sold as it sounds great
                http://www.bp.com/retail/sectiongene...tentId=7070005

Then BINGO!! It shows an average but "only" guarantees no less than 46 Cetane which is NO different than all the other big brands.
                http://www.bp.com/liveassets/bp_inte...ate_Diesel.pdf

Also take note of all those additives! (Wonder what Toyota thinks of that stringent clause?). Yikes!! They "Toyota" states no less than 48 Cetane on the D4D's.... Not sure if the min 46 cetain "From time to time" will cut it?

Coincidentally you will see this on all the other big brand fuels as they do not have to declare bio 5% (B5) or guarantee 50+ providing that they don't:

                A: Drop below 46 cetain

                OR

                B: Exceed bio 5% (B5).

If someone can show me or prove other wise in legal documentation giving solid clarification guaranteeing 50+ Cetane i am not sold by it as the government has already left holes in the clause... Take note of the legislative guide lines.

I personally can not see any changes in the past few or what ever years apart from new blanket marketing and changing the nozzle tip colour at the pump with awesome names like VORTEX or ULTIMATE or what ever.... Yes! the sulfur levels has dropped from 500ppm down to 50ppm then finally to 10ppm but B5 and cetain are cloudy when it comes to that 50+ cetain guaranteed.

I am not looking forward to the flaming on this one but just solid documented proof! Lol

                Cheers

That still doesn't come across as guaranteed 50+ cetain!! You have to prove that your fuel tank is not contaminated with less than 50+ cetain or you would still be screwed....

Still "no guarantee that it is 50+ is it?

                    Cheers

With Toyota recommending min 50% cetane for warranty and BP's guarantee on their fuel thats good enough for me.

Im putting arguably/allegedly the best diesel in Australia in my car and i have my documented proof from my lease report with the litres that went in and kilometers that were done, so if in the unlikely chance i had an injector problem i would have a bulletproof case that i had done everything possible.

BP for me as they warrant any damage to your fuel system (according to their T&C of course). I reckon the Prado is running better than when I was using Caltex (over 18mths ago) as well.

I spoke with BP a while back and yes they obtain their fuel from Shell in Sydney (who knows what happens when/if Shell shuts its doors) BUT they also obtain diesel for NSW from Asia. My understanding is that BP also puts its own 'addatives' in the diesel from Shell and I assume from Asia.

Can somone explain (in case I missed it on this thread) the difference between cetane number and cetane index?

I notice that you can't have the fuel in your tank for more than 30 days, so thats me screwed. I do a lot of k's in a short time while doing trips, then the old girl can sit around for weeks without moving at all. I have only done about 100kms since the last time I filled up around 6 weeks ago.

But I will burn a full tank this weekend coming
